Beer and breasts don't mix, says ad complaints board

A billboard featuring a scantily clad woman advertising beer has been found to breach advertising standards because it suggested a link between liquor and sexual attraction.

Complainant D Kernot said the billboard in New Plymouth for The Mill Liquor Save was "disgusting, immoral, provocative and seductive in nature" and was "repugnant and insulting to all women".

The billboard featured two rugby ball shaped bottles, each labelled "Beer Ball", and a blonde woman wearing a low cut bikini top, peering over the top of her sunglasses.

"I do not see why there should be any need to exploit the body of a woman to promote the sale of beer," the complainant said.

In response The Mill said the image was part of a wider campaign and could be considered "saucy" rather than "sexy".

"The use of the model needs to be considered in relation to the fact that we are selling a "hot new product best served chilled".

The Advertising Standards Complaints Board said it was in no doubt the billboard was sexually provocative and suggested a link between liquor and sexual attraction.

This breached Principle 2 of the Code for Liquor Advertising which required advertisements to observe a high standard of social responsibility.

It also breached Basic Principle 5 of the Code for People in Advertising by using part of the female anatomy to draw attention to a liquor product.

I'm pretty sure most people realise that there is a link between achohol and attraction, its probably been scientifically proven

I always wonder about the mentality of people who complain about ads like this. They probably don't even drink beer so the advertising certainly doesn't affect them! And yet they love ads with obnoxious children supposedly driving cars...

What, these people think there isn't one???????

Obviously they have never been working in a bar at 3am and watched the "Dance of the Desperates' just before closing. Truly frightening what some people will do for a shag and a bit of company.

Amazing is'nt it, all our good and humourous adds seem to get picked on by the PC Brigade. Like the Toyota and Hyuandi adds along with many billboards that have been brilliant and constructed by some very talented people. Then along come the Wingeing Wankers that obviously don't have a life except for maybe lurking in the shadows and probably molesting children, and come out with "you can't have that" when the TV and Movies are full of much greater violence and sexual content, but i guess that's ok with them.

I am speaking from experience! lol
I have worked in many bars and clubs in 3 countries, and strangely enough, the dance is the same in all places. Or for those old enough to remember, the song remains the same and the music goes on forever.
It is kinda funny sometimes too, you see people who really should know better, doing things that just make you hang your head and walk away (usually laughing under your breath).
