Double standards - revenue gathering etc

Disclaimer - this is not another cop bashing thread.

From the Hutt News 3 April 2007.

Article discussing a meeting held to discuss the Pomare Road/Waikare Road to SH2 intersection.

Basically, blocking an intersection onto SH2 and allowing a slip lane beside SH2 to the Grounsell Crescent - SH2 intersection.

This was raised due to a four person fatal accident that occurred there recently.

Anyway, enough of the background - it's a few comments made by Graham Taylor regarding alternatives to the above proposal that have got me going.

Graham Taylor is the Wellington Manager of Transit NZ.

He should know his stuff regarding traffic and roading, yeah ?

A few residents raised the placement of an 80kph speed restriction along this piece of motorway, combined with a speed camera, to slow traffic and enable more safe crossing of SH2 from the abovementioned intersection.

Graham Taylor's response was that highway traffic would ignore an 80kph limit, even if there was a speed camera. He gave the example of the speed camera on the 80kph stratch Ngauranga Gorge, which "has the highest hit rate of any camera in NZ and not just for downhill, because the speeds (recorded) uphill are even faster. People are ignoring the speed limit there because they don't recognise the need for it" Many drivers get past a known speed camera site, then just floor the accelerator again.

This coming from Wellington Manager of Transit NZ - I would love to ask the Minister of Police for his thoughts on Graham's comments.

Isn't Graham basically saying that speed cameras don't work ? The only other explanation is revenue gathering.

I think he has a point. Drivers slow down for the speed camera and then put their foot down afterwards.

In Northumbria (I think) in the UK they have no speed camera's and the toll has reduced and I seem to remember some press stuff about the Cops in the UK saying that speed cameras do not necessarily do anything other than gain revenue.

He sure does have a point - the problem is the point hasn't been taken up by Minister of Police or the Gov't.

Its an unfortunate global phenomenon mate. Everyone knows that the speed camera initiative is all about raking it in. Jeez in the UK there are no speed cameras on the country's worst accident blackspots. Plenty at speed change areas though, and at the end of overtaking lanes. Repeated appeals to do something really constructive about making roads safer fall of deaf ears.

    Click click bling bling mate.

Yes, well IMO the 80k limit up the Gorge is a joke! But I think that high earning camera only covers the downhill side where the limit probably is justifiable for the wet winter mornings when all those sleepy commuters come bowling down it.

The minister of police seems to be unable to grasp the concept as well...
Her statement on the news the other day [lowering] "Violent crime is the number one focus of the police".

If so, why are more officers not utilised in combatting this area of crime?

Course speed cameras work... they still keep on taking photos of those not as observant...
