then just thought, why not by a mac mini..?? then you get all that, without wrecking the warranty and you get a DVD drive/burner n all.. waste of time and money imho
ONE THING MAC USERS CAN'T DO THAT PC USERS CAN

I'm using a Mac mini (headless - VNC to access it if I need to) as my 'in-home' webserver (php/mysql/apache) and wi-fi access point. The AppleTV would do that job fine with less cost and power consumption.
Soon as someone can find a way of hacking more RAM in - I reckon the gloves are firmly off. OSX will run just fine on a 1GHz chip, but it soaks up RAM like there's no tomorrow.
Of course until then there's a really really good way of making an AppleTV a media player.... Don't fuck with it.
Could be about to become a mondo cheap Linux server though. Especially since I think mine is about to go to the great server room in the sky.

Feh... Apple schmapple...
For TV get yourself a series 1 Tivo and hack it... Mine's been going non-stop for a couple of years now... Very happy. Cost of Tivo delivered + 320Gb HD = $500 NZ.
For other content stream out to an old XBOX running XBMC. Cost $100. Team it up with Myth TV on a PC somewhere and it could be a cheap Apple beater.
But I like the standalone hardware thing so I don't need a million PCs everywhere so Tivo is cool.
Jeebus, I'm such a geek.
