I am not making this up. Last week, Pauline Hanson, who rose to fame for spouting bigoted gibberish in Parliament - and has said she is keen to be given another opportunity to do so - was being interviewed by the admirable Fran Kelly on the Breakfast Show on Radio National. About midway through, Hanson started a rant against Muslim immigration, to which Kelly responded, quite reasonably, that there were many example of Muslim immigrants making enormous contributions to Australia. Why, just last week, she said, the Bulldogs winger Hazem El Masri was in the studio promoting his own autobiography, El Magic, and he was obviously someone who had integrated well and was a very proud Australian. "There are Christian Muslims," Hanson replied dismissively. "There is no problems about that."
When informed by Kelly that there was no such thing as a "Christian Muslim," Hanson sailed on regardless. This raises many points, but I choose the first two and most obvious ones:
1. What is she smoking?
2. Gee, I'm glad I'm not someone who has put a lot of energy towards promoting her and her views, up to and including launching her autobiography! How embarrassing would that be? Alan? Just how embarrassing is it?
