Does it involve a midnight departure and a radar detector? Haven't tried, but might be keen to find out.

State highway one - Wainuiomata to Glenfield.
    GsxR1100.
7 hrs 20 mins - with coffee break in Taupo.
But was done at night leaving Wellington at 2000hrs.
Could be done a heap quicker now with balls and some of the quicker bikes now - would be interested to see what it would /could be done in now.

yip i reckon it could be alot quicker... you'd want a scanner along with the radar detector tho.

i recon i could do it in under 5 hours, easy

    edit:
    make that 4 hours

    680km / 3.5 hours = 195 average + 20 min fuel stops

    4 hours should be plenty

Someone lend me a bike, scanner and a detector...i'll give it a shot for ya's!! Or, conversly, i could strap a 20L of oil to the WarPig...i'd have to stop for oil top ups more than gas......
I'm with KiwiFruit, 4 hours should do it if ya got a bit commited

Fastest personal time, Mt Wellington to Stokes valley, 1300 Mk1 Escort (Sport model!) 6h 25m. Stopped for fuel & roadside piss stop.

Never done it faster on 2 wheels, damn ciggie stops stuff it all up!

I usually take SH1 to Turangi, up the Western side of the Lake to Tokoroa, then take the Matamata Rd from Tirau?, fucken boring bit of road that last bit but I hate Hamilton so it's worth it.

Time of travel and size of gonads would make more difference IMHO than CC rating etc.

in a car I have done palmy to auckland in jsut under 5 hours. Legal speeds 6 -7 1/2 hours depending on traffic. Auckland to welly at legal speeds 8-9hrs. Ghost rider could do it in under 3 hours i reckon

Ok i seem to be a slow rider but i did it on a CBX 750 F2 in 6.5 hours at night (i had 120/90 twin headlights) in the late 80s when the road was a lot twistier (Earthquake gully at Taupo etc ).
Saving grace was a 23 litre tank as the 24 hr gas stops were few and far between.
Early 80s on a worked CB400/4 always at night Wgtn - Hamilton was 7 hours with a tungsten bulb and bad eyesight because of it.
But beat this , Night time run Petone to Martinborough through the old Furgusen Drive hut road in 29 mins and only 2 cops tried to pull me over from the side of the road, I honestly didnt see emm till too late so carried on lol.
