They're mad. If we were to link to a foreign currency it should be the US dollar -- it's the currency around which most international trade is centred. The Aussie dollar isn't that much bigger than ours anyway, in global currency terms. And Australia isn't anywhere near our largest trading partner. So why bother?

The US dollar is struggling to match the Euro and has been for a while. Link it to that instead.

It seems silly for Key to say things like that, when (one of) National's biggest drawing card is their supposed economic abilities. It seems these days only `third world' countries and parts of South America stick with the non-floating currency.

41%? Where did they get those figures from?

YahooXtra home page poll presumably. Hardly an accurate indicator of what the public thinks. But then again, on matters such as this, the public probably is only interested in cheap TVs, second-hand Hondas, and holidays at Surfers. So having the currency as strong as possible is probably a good idea from their point of view. Shame about the productive sector getting fucked over royally though.

Ahh yes, but the productive sector are a minority these days and us consumers want our cheap TVs.

The Nats are guaging support for this to be an election issue. You will see more of this sort of thing.

From a political perspective it's a smart move on Key's part. It allows the Nats to call the shots but there is a down side to this. His comments and utterences can used against him should one his his 'platforms be rejected.

I'm looking forward to see how Clarke deals with all of this. To be brutely honest, to date she has not done to well.

What's everyone got against a common currency. I would like it so common that I don't have space for any more.

Who is NZ's largest trading partner?

    Up until 2002 anyway.

    Right now? Dunno.

Maybe these guys soon. We develop a lot of pasture for these guys and provide the vast majority of the straws for their dairy herds. Mostly rye grass derivatives and Jersey cows. They like small high yeild dairy animals in SE Asia.
