Buller gorge is a nice ride, so is the road from Westport to Karamea. 'The Last Resort' in Karamea is a good place to stop for a meal and bed.

...... try Sans Souci at Pohara Beach, just outside Takaka. There are about 9 units and the whole place is built from adobe mud brick with grass roofs! Brilliantly done and the Swiss couple who built it are really cool. They cook food to die for, or you can use their kitchen to cook your own. A great experience for about $80/night for 2 people. We spoilt ourselves there for a couple of days after 3 weeks of living in cabins.
Incidentally, the best cabins we found in the SI were any of the Top 10 chain as they have to meet a minimum quality standard. Not expensive either.
