NZ made Lap Timer - This time with pictures - We need beacons!!!

    Hi KB'ers,

If you have a lap timer and an IR beacon or three, please give this a quick skim through and see if you can give us a hand.

Sparkz posted a thread a few days back (here) that quickly got buried... hopefully these pictures speak louder than words!

The actual request is at the bottom of the post...

I've thrown in some made up figures, but this should give you a good idea of what this could/will look like. We've been on about this for more than a year now and the ball is starting to roll!

    Image descriptions:
Image #1 (LT 01) - This is one of a few concepts for the main display. Users can have a set of descriptions that they can then select for each event. See "Taupo KB Track Day". There will be a built in battery to retain time and date (top-right). Total laps will be configurable in race setup/menu. Split times (three on the screen at once) scroll off as new beacons are picked up. The split lap time differences could be set to show you the time difference against the previous lap split times, or the best split times so far this race. The "DISP" button will swap between two or three predefined display setups.

Image #2 (LT 02) - This is a simple post race review screen. Six laps on the screen at once, you can scroll through with PREV and NEXT. Best lap, and theoritical best laps are shown. DISP will swap to different setups - e.g. additional stats and comparisons.

Image #3 (LT 03) - Nothing new here except to give you a sense of how big the LCD is. Guess where all your configuration and race data is stored! This means you a) don't need to take the unit off your bike, and b) don't need a laptop at the track!

Guess where the lap times and configuration are stored? (hint: see LT 03) Some lap timers store from 100-200 laps before you have to erase them. Others brag about up to 2000... Oh whoop-dee-doo... This will allow you to store hundreds of RACES not just hundreds of laps.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

This is definitely still in the development stage but we've made significant progress. As additional changes are made we will release firmware updates that you can download, save on to SD card, and use to upgrade the functionality and features of your lap timer.

Small scale production is probably about 9-12 months away. We hope to enter this product at around $300-350 NZD. This will include a beacon, battery, and SD card.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    The request!
We would like to make our lap timer compatible with as many major brand lap timer beacons as possible. We've been unable to find the specifications of these beacons on the internet (not surprisingly!) so we need to sit there and measure the information being sent. In this way, you can use one of these lap timers and use someone elses lap and split beacons that have been already set up on the track.

If you have a beacon we can borrow, can you please post here or send me or Sparkz a PM. If you're uncomfortable with loaning one to us for a week or so, but would be okay with us coming around to have a look and play... Please let us know. Anywhere in the Auckland or Pukekohe area would be fine.

    Thanks for the help folks!

Can't help with the beacon, but I'll help by buying one of these puppies when they are complete.

Sounds really good! Also can't help with a beacon, but will be keen to get one when they are ready.

Ill be bringing up my beacon to the kb trackday if you want to have a look at it there. I'm not sure if I am keen on lending it out though.
