    NSR250 suspension setup

    I've been thinking in the last weeks that it is time to modify my bike's suspension setup: the back is so hard that is doesn't even move when I sit on the bike and the front is too soft - when I brake, it feels like I'm plunging forward.

    The only problem is that I have no idea how to do it and what is the correct procedure. For the front suspension, on the top of each fork I have a screw that can be turned with a screw driver and a nut around it. I presume one is for damping and the other one is for rebound (I don't think I have preload setup), For the back suspension I have no ideea where the controls are.

    Any of you guys knows how to do it?

    Thanks for the link. Is there somewhere I can find the whole article? The link you posted seems to point to only the first part.

    So one problem "solved" - I know where the target is (if I find the whole article, that is...). I only remains to find out how exactly to do it on an NSR (which is the preload screw and which are the damping screws for front and back.

    The rest of the article is buried in the archives, have a look.
    The preload is adjusted with the big nut on the top of the forks, and the collar on the rear shock

    The best thing you can do is ride up to the 'naki for a weekend and book some time with Shaun Harris when he isn't getting ready for the IoM TT.

    In the meantime could you do something for me?

    Photograph the top of your forks, the bottom of your forks from behind, and your rear shock top and bottom. Does your rear shock have a remote oil reservoir?

    Which MC18 is it? '88: MC18 R 2J (R) , R 4J (SP); '89: MC18 NSR250R 5K (Standard), R 6K ( SP model)

    If it's '88 then there's only preload adjustment available for the forks. '89 then it's the following: R type : Front: Telescopic semi adjustable for preload only, Rear: Single shock swingarm non-adjustable
    SP type : Front: Telescopic cartridge valve fully adjustable type for preload and rebound, Rear: Single shock adjustable damper ( rebound/ compression )

    If you've got preload adjustment on the rear then it may not be a standard MC18 shock.

    Thanx MrPeanut. I'm starting to think I am blind. I looked on nsr-world but I couldn't find anything suspension wise.

    Thanks for the offer Jim2

    According to the registration papers it's a '90 which is preposterous because all the bike has MC18 characteristics (engine, frame and decals), and from decals and the position of the exhaust pipes I assume it's an R4 or R5.

    Now the bike is at the shop getting it's warrant of fitness, a new front tyre, a steering bearing and a carb cleaning (shit that's gonna burn my pocket ), but as soon as I have it back I will take pictures of the front and back suspension and post them.

    I used to race an MC18 NSR, and on the front forks it has a srew adjustment for preload with rings on it so you can get it the same each side, has it got that? and on the back there is a giant nut (collar) that adjust the preload, but you need a c-spanner to adjust it. I ended up puting racetec emulators in mine to get the front forks working right
