    No wheelies in Tennessee

Pop a wheelie in Tennessee and get arrested for reckless driving, under a measure unanimously passed by the Senate Transportation Committee.

The same politicians are considering amending their current compulsory helmet law so that it is only mandatory for under-21 year old riders.

The law works in funny ways due to people's perceptions. For one that spent a good part of my life on dirt bikes where whether we have two, one or no wheels on the ground is part of normal riding behaviour, to me a wheelie is no big deal and generally not as dangerous as it might appear to the layman observer.... but then has there been a history of squids coming to grief in Tennessee.
    Cheers

The inhabitants of the Southern States and Tennessee in particular have an "interesting" take on life from our perspective. I was working over there in the mid 90's and one of the guys in our Memphis office was horrified to see me wearing a biker T shirt with the words " If you haven't seen God, you're not riding fast enough" on the back. He genuinely believed that one of the religious cranks (it is bible belt, after all) would be sufficiently outraged to actually instigate a drive-by shooting with me as the target.

Lovely people as individuals, but colllectively......

Yeah they have some funny ideas alright. I have a friend in the US who is astounded that we have "Hells Pizza" and their various marketing tools. He reckons if you opened a Hells in most states of the US you would first get boycotted, then get saboutaged, and if you kept at it you'd likely get killed.

Apparently they take religion rather seriously!

It's those religious activists that play a part in keeping America behind with modern technology research, etc. Well, ol' bush can't be helping can he...
