    Broke my speedo cable

Dammit. My new-found quest for better acceleration has taken its first victim...

Actually, to tell the truth, I think I might have re-routed the speed cable in such a way it was putting a bit of pressure on it at the fairing.

Anyway, it's broken the cable at the speedo end about an inch and a half from the end, meaning the speedo doesn't go any more.

Can I get just the inner bit for the speedo cable? Or do I have to buy a whole new cable?

Are the Yamaha parts pretty interchangeable as far as speedo cables go?

Or, even better, are all speedo cables pretty much the same?

    Any ideas, people?
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

    Drat!!

Rooted cable by not routing correctly. Root.

I think you will need a whole new cable. Get the part number and check some wreckers out.

From looking at mine...(clicks all the time) all speedo cables are pretty much the same... mine looks like the same ones that sit inside a falcon...or a dremel extension for that matter!... worth a look!

I weld them back together - but then I'm a cheap prick. You can get inners made - the cable is just cut to length and then the ends squared up for the drive.Dunno who the hell you could find to do it these days - a speedo repair shop? John Gurney used to do them way back, had the tools and stuff, but he's been out of the game for yonks.

Find someone who does industrial instrument repair.
They will make up a new inner cable.
Mine cost $30 and was done in 10 min.
I just showed him my broken one and he matched it up.

I'll give it a go. Ordinarily I'd be pleased to not know my speed as it would give me a kind of "plausible deniability" excuse with Gini if I got a speed camera ticket, but the recent increase of power with the fizzer coupled with the whole 80 demerits thing makes me think I really should keep an eye on the speed.

I know that 4250 rpm in top (6th) is 100km/hr but it feels so nice from 5500 up I just have to get it into that power...and as for 8000 and up wahoo!!!! and with no speedo you can fool yourself its not really that fast.

Trouble is, I can't remember what rpm it is in 2nd to do 50km/hr and this is where I'll get in trouble dammit.

If the break is in a part of the cable run that is reasonably straight, you should be able to join it. I'd try silver soldering (easyflo)
I think I have some here if you want to try it, and the propane gas bottle is almost full.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

When you're on 80 demerits, you make a point of knowing what speed you're going at...

    Hi Pete.

I came round to your house Saturday and, again, you weren't there

Here's the bit that's broken off. It's right at the speedometer end.

Do you reckon it can be fixed?

Standard answer - "you can fix anything. How much do you want to spend?"

But yeah I'll give it a go, Was working Sat morning and at the hospital sat afternoon/evening (daughter in car crash, ok now)
I'll be home about 1745 - 1800 and dig out the stuff.

    Its fixed its fixed!

Thanks to the ever-resourceful skills of pete376403 and some clever surgery involving a brass bolt, a metal rod, some beef tallow-based duzall, some solder, and a rough file, I now have a perfectly functional speedo!

    Thanks Pete!
