While we're on the subject of drummers, I saw an interview with one Richard Starkey, aka Ringo Starr, and he said "I am the world's most innovative drummer" (hope I've got the quote right). I thought, "You pompous git!"
He's a very basic and not particularly talented drummer, and probably the least talented of the Beatles (although the only one that was 'famous' before they formed). Although he was good as the narrator in "Thomas the Tank Engine".
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Ian Paice from Deep Purple is/was pretty good. Good efforts on "Made In Japan" (esp. The Mule)
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

Sorry mate, but as a drummer I have to disagree there. From a pop perspective he did innovate, and changed the perception of what was allowable within a pop framework. Some of his stuff is pretty darn good for someone who often gets the accusation levelled at him. I will stress that I'm not a great Beatles fan, but Ringo opened the door for John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker et al to a lesser or greater extent. I've done a lot of transcription of Beatles work for some of my older students, there are quite a few, "What The?" moments that require some serious skills in both technique and most importantly, feel. I've got too many drummer influences to even enter into a list or debate of "best" drummer. The only thing I know for certain is that you can only like what YOU like. Music is subjective, and all critique is from a subjective basis. But from the history perspective of rock and pop in the last 40 years, without Ringo Starr a pop or rock rhythm section would be a very different, possible less expressive place to be. IMO. See?

    Hmmm a metal fan here.
I'd go for Dave Lombardo - best metal drummer.

As far as metal drummers go, and when you say metal, I guess you're talking post-Metallica metal here, I'd say it's a tossup between Metallica's Lars Ulrich (if we keep it to the Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets albums), and R.J. Herrera from Suicidal Tendencies - check out his drumming on You Can't Bring Me Down, off Lights, Camera, Revolution....

with a side nod to Stephen Perkins (Janes Addiction, Infectious Grooves)
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Hmmmm ...He's good, - shit - theyre all good, but at this level I guess it comes down to personal preferences.
I still prefer D L - did some good work with Testament on The Gathering - Legions of the Dead and D N R.

For a (non) motorcycle song, my fav is the Hellacoptas cover of Speedfreak, by Motorhead........

Still reckon Raymond Herrera would kick his butt.

Check out the latest Fear Factory album - some of his craziest work yet.

It's not just the speed - it's the precision as well.

But no room for the intricacies of drumming though - that's the trouble with metal - most metal bands have trouble with musical dynamics and resort to either incorporating pseudo-classical frippery or go all mushy ballad.

Which is why I reckon Tool are the best metal band in the world today.

With the sublime Danny Carey behind the kit.

    Sorry.
    Yeah, take your point.

    Allright, I'll have another go.

    'Iron Horse' - Motorhead

Best metal drummer? Vinnie Paul would get my vote. I just had a relisten to 'cowboys from hell'. The drumming kicks arse.
