Help I want to buy!!

Help. Any body have any idea where I can purchase a 47 tooth rear sproket for my 1995 Suzuki Bandit GJ77. I have purchased a 49 tooth sproket, and that is all they say you can get for them. I took a 47 tooth off and would like to replace with the same. The reason being that most of my running around is done a 100kph and I would like to drop the revs down a smidgen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well you can get most size sprockets almost anywhere. And if you cant find it, Sawyers in Wellington can machine one quite cheap. I wouldnt recommend dropping many teeth on the bandit however, you will notice a lack of acceleration in all gears. The gearing that they are in at the moment means that at 100km/h you are not far away from the power band for overtaking. The engines are designed to rev high so don't worry how high it revs.

I quite liked the 47 tooth sprocket. It only dropped the revs about 1000rpm. Down to 8000 @ 100kph. I would have kept that but it was very worn out. Just trying to get better fuel milage. Over taking was not an issue either, I found that it wound up pretty happily through the revs.

That'd make sense actually as I have the VVT model. Its useless under its powerband.. It pops the valves open at 11000 so it cruises at 110 at 10000. Another reason why I like the larger sprocket, with 49 teeth it pops the front wheel up in 1st

The flip side of this is that I can Buy a 14 & 15 tooth front sprocket. Has any body fitted one. Do they fit with out the chain hitting inside the housing. What did it do for the RPM.

100km/h should be 10grand on a gj74a, not 100% sure what the newer models are but should be roughly the same

not sure what this will do but i imagine it would take it out of the power band (is yours a vvt model?) i'd hate to be doing 100km/h and having to drop 2 gears down just to pass a car.

I also see the point though - at 180 my bike would just about be touching the red line but once again i reckon it would drop it below the "power mark" so I personally would do it

i dont think its worth changing the sprockets - you still need to change the oil frequently

let us know what you end up doing though - im really interested to see what happens!

All i'm trying to do is get more than 180km out of a tank of gas. Getting hard to convince the missus that a bike is necessary. You know?? Most of my running is done at 100kmh as i work out of town for nz steel.

Replacing the sprockets will help fuel consumption. Also check if your chain is OK if the sprockets were run so low. Having smooth running gear helps a lot! You should also get a scottoiler if possible, they do wonders for wear! My bandit does around 200-250kms per tank, depending on how I ride. Yours should do the same?

Haha, not as bad as a ride I went on a few months ago. 100Kms to a full tank. Stuck in high revs the whole trip. The bike seemingly loved every second too Needed new tires after that ordeal.. And you're noticing this bike needs oil changes a lot sooner than other bikes? It gets all manky quite quickly......

yea i think the bandit is oil every 8 ks, i'd reccommend doing it every 4 (not that i did)

I do semi just to save costs. I race it round on weekends and commute on weekdays. It's my belief that fully synthetic doesnt heat up fast enough for a 20 minute commute so I dont use it due to engine wear? I might be wrong but thats what I got told by a mechanic.
