Street Race in Dunedin

Sadly, it would appear the Dunedin road race is off, for this year and probably forever.

The enthusiasm of the new young guns in the OMCC has been blunted by the negativity of certain older members.

Dennis Ireland put a lot of effort into getting it off the ground, including securing major backing from the Dunedin City Council. He had the support of a good forward-thinking bunch of club members, but in the end the tunnel-visioned element appears to have won. Politics and pettiness rules.

Yesterday the track inspection was gatecrashed by a couple of antis and yet another delaying tactic was put in place.

Don't believe it when someone says 2010. There won't be any resource consent in place for the circuit, which is exactly what these people want!

I don't understand the negativity comment as I was under the impression that all those on the sub-committee were trying to make it a happening thing.(not on sub-committee myself though) I only heard one comment that could be considered negative at the last club meeting and that was one official stating they personally would not be steward as they didn't want to have thier neck on the block if someone was killed and you can hardly blame them that cautious attitude due to recent events elsewhere.
The sub committee were asked by the club members to try make it work and get back to the club with an answer. Dennis had put in a HUGE effort and the club members involved have been having endless meetings trying to make this fly, I know because I have been trying to meet some of them myself and its been hard getting them free. I have heard people say the time frame was going to cause difficulties but as far as I am aware there is nobody actually anti the race.
I really would love to ride it along with many other club members either now or at some future date.
No doubt all will be revealed at the next meeting.

As I suspected this topic was discussed at length at the Committee meeting on Tuesday night. I do not have authority of the club to report what is discussed there but think I am allowed to say that the topic will be brought up at the General meeting on Monday 23rd March. If any club members have an interest then they should go to that meeting.

I personally still stand by my previous statement that as far as I am aware there is no faction or member of the club trying to thwart any roadrace plans.

I also hope the discussion doesn't go on too long as the meeting is also the Club prizegiving for 2008 and supper . (I like my savories while they are still hot!)

OK there is some news about the roadrace in the OMCC newsletter. For those not in the club I will paraphrase the message from the President.

The street race is postponed until a later date. The club doesn't have MNZ consent to run on the proposed date however does have a recommended course layout from the MNZ track inspector. The club still hopes to run this event in the future.

I think quayboard should look at the newsletter for a comment from a concerned club member.
If making comments in a public forum such as this I believe you should identify yourself.
