    Chain help

    Hey

    I recently saw that my chain needed lubing. so I did it, however now it sounds like the chain is rattling while accelerating, its not too loud other wise and im not sure how you are supposed to adjust the chain on a single swingarm bike

    I dont know though cus the chain doesnt seem anymore loose. it seems to me to be pretty much the same as before I lubed it.

    and one last thing anyone know a good chain lube in a spray can. The one I currently use makes a huge mess the first day after using it. Ive even tried differing ammounts it doesnt seem to help. and its not good getting oil all over the tyre lol

    I have the same problem with the lube making a mess - apparently you can get chain wax which doesn't fling off as much (although i haven't tried it yet)
    You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be quoted out of context, then used against you.

    The chain slack should be about 30mm, measured at the midpoint of the chain. Pull the bottom length of chain down (A), then push it up towards the swingarm until you see the top length of chain start to move (it'll lift up slightly due to tension) - this is B. The slack is the distance between points A and B.
    To adjust the chain, there's a C-spanner that hooks onto notches on a plate behind the rear sprocket. Loosen the nut at the back of the rear hub (17mm?), then use the c-spanner to rotate the adjuster clockwise or anticlockwise till the slack is right, then tighten the locknut again.

    If you're stuck, let me know, and I'll send you some pix for the VFR800 (pretty much the same).

    Better to have the chain a bit slack than too tight, although either extreme will affect your gearchanges, and if it's too loose the chain will eat into the swingarm.

    Lubing: Use Motul chain lube (a spray-on grease) or Spectro chainwax, or something similar. Apply it when the chain is warm (after a ride) and let it dry overnight. There should be very little fling-off.

    Try Moto-Line Chainlube - I have 'discovered' this recently and use the one rated Racing. Seems excellent - little or no mess, lasts well and not overly expensive @ $22.00/500ml.
    Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

    Never heard of a c spanner before, I guess i have to buy or borrow one from someone :P

    Hmm maybe I should try warming the chain up and see if that helps with the lubind. as I didnt do that the last time haha

    It's actually officially called a "pin wrench" (in Murka, at least).

    See the pic of my tool kit below (#5, circled in red). Just to the right of it is another one (4), for adjusting the preload on the rear shock, and there's an extension handle (13) that fits both of them, up in the top left.
    If you don't have one hiding on your bike, try a wrecker, or buy one from a tool shop / engineering supply place.

    Or you could buy a genuine Honda one, at a bazillion times the price and haldf the quality.

    Shit I didn't know you guys were based at Tamaki campus? What building? Am I allowed to sneak in one day and have a peek at your magnificent V-twin?

    Yea thats no worries. It is in the main campus at the moment I think as the crank is getting balanced. But we have many other exciting goodies
