    House insurance cost?

    Hi there

First time home owner looking to get some house insurance.

What kind of price-range is reasonable for a cheapish house in Auckland? I don't want/need to divulge details as we aren't all insurance assessors

I'm just looking for a general sort of range i.e. $200-$300 or $400-$500 etc?

    Sleep is for the weak.

i pay about $300 i think for a 180 square metre house with AMI

but its not based on house value, really only the size of the house, since thats the size of the house they'll have to fork out for if it goes up in smoke etc

Cheapest option is probably from your bank.

Preferably get Total Replacement (based on the size of your house) and discounts may apply for age, packaged policies, security alarm, excess level.

PM me if you want specifics.

If you are a first home owner then get your lender to pay up the insurance for the first year. Then shop around. We were with the national bank insurance (underwritten by tower) and they paid our insurance for both house and contents for a year. After the year was up I looked around and switched to AMI as they were heaps cheaper. I couldn't tell you what it is off hand but house and contents insurance is cheap. Around 6 or 700 per year for both.

It depends on what your house is made of too - ours is brick and it was cheaper to insure than wood, probably due to a slightly lower risk of fire destroying the whole structure. Shop around though, I think we were quoted prices between about $300 and $500 for the same cover.
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!
