Insurance -- single day cover

Hihi,

So I bought a cage. Well, it's not much more than a motorbike anyway (850cc ). 1962 Mini Mk.I.

It's in Raglan and I want to pick it up this Saturday. I also don't have a car license (at all, at least yet), so I'll be getting a mate to drive it up for me.

I would like to have the car insured for this short drive up from Raglan to Auckland, at least third-party.

I probably can't insure the car yet, as I don't have a driver's license (also it has a personal plate yet that will be changed, just popped into my head). Is it possible to get a single day's cover over the phone for a one-time fee for this mate of mine (he's under 25 too)?

My insurance agreed to cover me for the day on a few bikes I was test riding (the dealer had gone into receivership and no longer had insurance and were therefore reluctant to let a newb loose on their bikes).
They didn't charge me anything, there was just an excess payable in the event that I claimed. But I did have two other existing policies with them.

Cheers for that mate. I'm with Kiwibike insurance though so I can't see they'd want to cover me for a car (well actually I won't be driving it -- so maybe I get my mate to talk to his insurance company).

Try state - 15 day cover trial period. You can cancel anytime within the 15 days without having to pay etc...

Would it matter, then, that I have no (car) license? If not, do I then just specify my mate as a named driver or something?

All right, I ended up getting cover under Swann Insurance. Covered for my under-25 mate doing the driving (excess is pretty shocking though :O). Seem like quite a good bunch. Cheap, too -- suppose there's a couple of advantages to having a 47-year-old car (classic car insurance, lol).

They do classic bikes apparently too. Better start saving for that Goldie.

sounds like a old morris mini 850 I had a few decades back, magic wand gear stick, push button start on the floor, and easliy did a tonne

Well we got it back from Raglan. Stupid frigging British things with water-cooling >.< -- boiled it just as we came off the Coronation Rd exit coming home, blew the head gasket, it started pinking, steam everywhere, even coming through the back of the dashboard into the cabin >.< >.< Very spectacular.

Wouldn't have any trouble if it was air-cooled. Issigonis missed an opportunity there :P Should've talked to Soichiro first!

Temperature started to climb at the Bombays and never really recovered afterwards, heh. Poor little 850cc thing getting thrashed by a couple of young fullas. Oh well. It wouldn't be a vehicle of mine if I didn't have to pull it to bits. I hear Strong Brothers on the North Shore have a lot of bits, any other suggestions? eBay.co.uk have complete top end gasket kits for about $NZ30, but then I've got to wait for it to be shipped here so I might buy locally.

I don't know about doing the tonne (we had GPS and while 50kph=50kph, 130kph=90kph apparently ), but it's got the floor push button start and funny gear stick (first is where the passenger's knee goes). I took it for a brief spin and had trouble getting it into third (no synchromesh on third I assume, I'll have to learn this double-clutching business I think?).

I don't see a Barry on the registration history anywhere (btw -- first owner in 1962 named Mabel ), so I'll assume it's free from 100mph-downhill-tailwind abuse

your have it sorted in no time...great litle cars,BTW found it so much easier to just detatch the whole subframe when doing major work on the motor etc

Personally I don't like Swine Insurance, I crashed a Triumph some years ago, and it was insured with them.

They tried all the usual tricks to get out of the payout... my cheque hadn't cleared yet, insurance proposal hadn't been approved by the Wollamalu office, I must have been drinking etc etc.

Got paid out, but made a decision to steer clear of them.
