Buggered speedo Cable

1998 Ducati 600ss.

Speedo cable broken (on closer inspection was pretty rusty inside and had rusted through).

Do I have to wait until Monday and go to Haldanes for a new Ducati speedo cable or are these things pretty standard (i.e. can I drop into Cycletreads and get a non Ducati one tomorrow?)

I want to go for a ride tomorrow but it will be taking a chance on tickets if I have no idea how fast I am going. Bike is fairly new to me so I can't tell the speed from the revs and the gear the way I could on my VTR.

Oh, and why is it that when a bike craps itself in some way it ALWAYS does it on a Saturday night ensuring that the one day you were going to be able to get a good run on the bike has to be postponed until the following week?

should be able to have them make one up if they dont got none (giv em a call and if not them try the wreckers out their way)

Got a nice surprise with the price of Ducati parts (again) $40 gets the full cable - inner, outer and ends. Problem is the snapped end is proper jammed in the housing - gonna send it to a proper bike mechanic tomorrow.

It's been fun riding around an guessing what speed I'm doing though - you should all try it sometime.

I recently had a good long open road ride without the speedo after the cable sheared through. I found I actually enjoyed the ride more as I spent less time concentrating on the actual speed I was doing. My average speed was quicker too. I was following Shadows, who I normally struggle to keep up with. Without the speedo I was able to keep closer.

I used to use the revs on the VTR 250.

I haven't got a clue what revs equal what speed at what gear on the Ducati - never yet paid enough attention.

And the price doesn't mean more cleaning products but rather I need only miss 5 meals instead of 7 to pay for the cable.

Fark! Jest as bluddy well you got the reserves stored up from past feeds to tide you between meals I knew you were having too much fun on your Duc - not paying enuff attention to the speed/gear/rev range!

I thought you said you were feeling like a newbie on it again! Didn't we all try to work out what the revvy thingy did compared to the speedy reading thing after we worked out we weren't going to fall off or poop ourselves going around the first corner?
