Five years ago I never would have thought that through one "bike" forum, I would meet the woman I'll spend the rest of my life with, meet people I now consider my best friends, get a sponsored race package, and perhaps a shot at racing the IOM, a lifelong dream.
It's "just" a forum but it means alot.

Eh why do I need support? I've lost weight and stopped drinking!
But it isn't just a forum. KB transcended the boundaries of "forum" by being more about maintaining relationships with the meat-space analogue rather than the virtual avatar and handle.
It sounds like a subtle distinction, but it is the first "forum" in 20 years of me using usenet, BBS's, newsgroups, technical forums and knowledge bases where the primary function of the forum is to organise a physical activity and maintain bonds of friendship on the basis of an actual physical activity.

I have to disagree there, McJim.
I see a "forum" as a gathering of "net-nerds" who only gather in electronic form.
We are a community.
After the tragic weekend, when three of our members departed from our ranks, the emotions, greif, sorrow, support and bonding, brought us far closer as a group.
Alas, since then, we have become a different entity altogether.
