We won't see it here and if our Government whinges our fuel will get expensive. The Emirates, quite rightly see this as their Cup bid and their boat. Who crews it is incidental. Crews can be bought.
I actually spoke to Grant Dalton and Dean Barker about this at a work function in December last year (I had exactly the same concern).

He said, without a doubt, the next Cup will be held here if we win. There is no contract with the Emirates airline or Government to have it in the UAE. He also said Emirates (Airline) understood from day one that if they were successful, that the next cup would be defended NZ. As the bid is from the RNZYS, they get the call on where it goes. He did say that some of the pre-regattas would probably be held in UAE.

Although, of course, we are getting ahead of ourselves anyway. We need to knock over the Italians twice more before we get a shot at the Swiss.

The RNZYS may be in for a shock then, because that certainly ISN'T what is being projected in the country that has naming rights on the boat.

Grant Dalton and Dean Barker are on the payroll of the UAE too, so their word doesn't actually hold much weight I'm afraid.

Whatever happens, Americas Cup racing has very little to do with "normal" kiwis, and the actual racing is about as exciting and looked forward to as much as drinking a cup of your own cold vomit.

Why get over it? It is THE single most boring "professional" event in the Universe.

Really, I thought that was F1?

I understand that you don't like the America's Cup, you've made these points before. What I don't understand is why you have to post the same thing in every America's Cup thread?

Maybe the UAE are in for a shock. What is publicly projected often isn't what happens.

It all depends on who is doing the projecting.

Thanks for the killjoy anyway, we are all aware you don't like the America's Cup. Im the meantime, most of us can celebrate some (mostly) Kiwi success. It seems to be against the rules in this country to celebrate Kiwis doing well (Scott Dixon got about 15-20 seconds on the news for 2nd in the Indy and you barely hear of BT or Josh Coppins in general media)

I heard (um... from TV3 news) there was an ironclad contract already signed and sealed before the regatta began, written especially to avoid a sponsor from trying to take the hosting rights away from the winning yacht club's home port.
But I just heard that, don't know anything more.

Meh, butt out if you're going to take the piss. We already had a America's Cup haters thread, this one can be for people who are watching it.

Solid win, but I think Luna Rossa just gave up towards the end. Saw it was hopeless -- so it looked like way more of a thumping than it probably was. Going from ~45seconds to 1m38seconds in one leg seems a bit much.

    Hmmm.
    Rugby is the most boring.

    3rd is synchronised swimming...

Anyway, why aren't you out in the garage doing "bike stuff"?

The country doesn't have naming rights ... the airline does. Emirate Airlines is just a corporate sponsor ... the same as Air NZ was (is?) for the rugby NPC. How much say do you reckon Air NZ had in where rugby games were played?

I'm almost certain that there is a clause that if 'Team New Zealand' and that is the official name, wins the America's cup it will be raced here. I don't recall how much the Government have coughed up for this but I do seem to recall that that was one of the conditions for Govt funding. I have looked on the net but can not find anything on this.

Yeah, I vaguely recall the same thing.
