    UPDATE:

Came home tonight to find the peanut butter trap on the kitchen floor untouched (until I stood on it wearing only socks), but the other trap in the garage had fresh poo nearby and the peanut butter and honey eaten - without setting it off!!... oh and the carrot was removed to the side and dumped.

    My foot hurts.........

Peanut butter is a goodie - never fail bait in our place when the field mice come calling but I sometimes add a little knob of cheese for traditions sake!

Trap placement is crucial. The mice will have a regular route and you need to place the trap in a place near or along the route and in a place where micky will feel it's safe to stop for a nosh up. Under things, in corners, in a cupboard etc - not out in the open

    Cheers

So the big neon sign in the middle of the floor saying "Eat this you little bastard!!" with big red arrows isn't a winner then?

Erm - no unless you are really only pretending to catch them to impress the misus without wanting to actually hurt the little dears and deal with the sad little corpses...

Okay so some cats ain't fantastic ratters, or mousers.. Its okay..

If you decide to bait PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE choose wisely.... We poisoned one of my cats a few years back... Select something that doesn't cause secondary poisoning (in case your cat decides to eat a mouse/rat that has been baited) Just because the bait is put where your cat can't reach it doesn't mean that the ain't gonna eat anything that has gotten into the bait..

People have already suggested peanut butter.. Good bait for your mouse traps...... It usually does the trick... The plastic traps are good as they are more sensitive to "light" touches... We had some metal and wood ones that you'd whack it and they STILL would not go off..

They might be finding enough food else where in your house for them to not even need to think about going for whats on the traps..

Mum had some cats once that just used to gorge themselves silly on rats and mice............................................An d then go vomit them up all over my dads motorbike...

All else fails invest in another cat.. Can never have too many..

These mice have been harder to evict than the mongrel mob but I got two of them last night. Yayyyyy. (just tasty cheese bait and hungry mice)

Suspect there may be more about so have placed a (personally modified) hair triggered trap in the ceiling, with tasty cheese "and peanut butter" as bait.

This trap is tricky to set and place, as my fingers will testify but tonight , if there are any mices there, they are in deep doo doo.

I feel all my old hunting instincts and skills bursting to be noticed and screaming, pick me, pick me but I shall remain cool and cunning in the face of the enemy.

Death stalks the invaders tonight. (Hunter) John.
Score so far, three baits gone and and two fingers caught resetting traps! Fucking mice! John.

    Watch Blackadder II...

"[Baldrick enters, wearing an apparatus on his head which is dangling a piece of cheese from
the end of his nose. Edmund begins to speak about something, then notices.]

Edmund: [calmly] Why have you got a piece of cheese tied to the end of your nose?
Baldrick: To catch mice, My Lord. I lie on the floor with my mouth open and hope they scurry in.
    Edmund: ...and do they?
    Baldrick: Not yet, My Lord.
Edmund: Well, I'm not surprised, your breath comes straight from Satan's bottom, Baldrick. The
only sort of mouse you're going to catch is one without a nose.
Baldrick: That's a pity, because the nose is the best bit on a mouse.
Edmund: Any bit of a mouse would seem like luxury compared to what Percy and I must eat
tonight. We are entertaining puritan vegetable folk, Balders; and that means no meat.
Baldrick: In that case, I shall prepare my Turnip Surprise.
    Edmund: and the surprise is...?
Baldrick: ...there's nothing else in it except the turnip.
Edmund: So, in other words, the Turnip Surprise would be...a turnip.
    Baldrick: [realisation] Oh yeah..."

Peace hath higher tests of manhood

    than battle ever knew.

Used to have a monster grey cat, used to bring mice and rats in all the time. He'd eat them on the kitchen floor, all of them except the kidneys, didn't like 'em apparently. Mouse kidneys look exactly like peanuts, untill you try to pick them up, slippery little suckers.

Clean traps in hot soapy water to get your smell off and use gloves to bait it. Bait: Chocolate, they love it. Tweak the trap for maximum sensitivity, melt a teaspoon of chocolate and drip it onto the trigger. Can't be plucked off, they've got to munch it in place.

Place the traps under fridge, in hot water cupboard, behind stove, anywhere warm, low and covered.

It's also worth finding out where the little bastards are getting into the house. If it's on piles there's probably holes in the floor for drains, water pipes etc. You can seal them up with space-invader type stuff.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon

You bastards! While reading the latest posts, Smooch brought a mouse in and let it go in my bloody study! Andy 'caught' it in a box but miraculously by the time he got outside, the box was empty... and the mouse was seen runing behind my computer. So after turning the study inside out, the damned thing is still here - well, according to Shelby, who is sitting by the chest of drawers that at least one mouse had been under, judging by the amount of mouse shit that was under there!

Great, just what I need to chew on my new computer cables...
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!

Toast man, ignore zooter advice at your peril didn't you! Put traps up against the wall like I told you already.

The plastic ones with the red bit that you squeeze to arm it are what everyone is talking about. My flatmate tells me they are the shiznitz. Don't have to touch the mouse and they go off really easily. Supermarkets sell them. The trap bit springs down from above making a mouse and plastic sandwich before any mouse can jump clear. 100% success rate.
    Insert witticism.
