Fixing my crashed Volty - Bent forks

Hey everyone, was just wondering approximately how much it costs to straighten bent forks. They're not bent too bad, just twisted a bit. I rang colemans and they said over a grand for each fork to buy them!!!!!

Also, the front end is pretty much all smashed so I need headlights speedo unit etc, anyone know where to pick these up cheap at all?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! I hate not having me bike!

You could try ringing around a few of the bike wreckers. From memory the Volty is essentially a GN250 with different bodywork. They may be able to provide you with a complete front assembly (although obviously not if the bikes been invloved in a head on), and perhaps with a replacement headlight.

Are you sure that the frame/steering head hasn't been bent?

I have no idea, not really much of a mechanic. Will probably need someone witha bit of knowledge to have a look at it. I can see though that the forks are slightly bent in opposite directions ie. one forward and one back but only slightly. Handle bars are bent too, and also the piece of the frame where the headlight attaches to.

Hi Metalor, I spent a lot of time in wreckers looking for Volty bits recently and unfortunately there aren't a lot around. Some GN bits will fit and others won't (for example the GN handlebars are higher than the Volty's so you have to get longer cables to go with them.)

Admittedly I was mostly looking for back-end bits so I didn't try to find a headlight etc. You might have more luck.

The first thing to do is to get someone to inspect the bike and make sure it's basically sound. If there is structural damage, the rest of the damaged bits are irrelevant. I got my bike inspected by the mechanic at Coleman's and once he was sure the basics (frame and swing arm) were ok, he made a parts list for me.

Then I went to wreckers and looked for genuine Volty second-hand parts, and new aftermarket parts. Don't even think about new genuine parts! The prices will make you cry!

Also check out Trademe. But only do that once you're really clear what parts you're looking for, what they would cost new, and which bits are interchangeable with the GN etc.

    Good luck

Okey--accessory bars are gonna be easy.Headlight depends how munted it is -If its just the front lens section.I think a GN one will drop in --if its the complete headlight An aftermarket accessory one will be the answer.
the forks maybee twisted in the tripple clamps but if only a slight bend will be easily straightened

I saw you go past at spag junction. Then the mottor way stopped. It looked like you were sore but ok with lots of people round. Are the forks actually bent or just the bars are twisted round?
Would a pair of gsxr 250 forks fit anyone know? Or not long enough

Yea, I got up straight away. A few people were pretty upset cos it must have looked pretty bad but I got of pretty bloody lightly. I have no idea, not much of a mechanic so I'm pretty lost unfortunately. Sucks not having me bike though!

Yep, I'd recommend getting a set from a wreckers, you don't know if the integrity has been comprimised from the boof.

We straightended mine temporarily with a neighbours help, strapping the forks to a post and using a neighbours car at the other end. I ran into the arse of a fella that thought he had right of way (he DIDN'T! and emergency braked in front of me). I bent my forks on the arse of his car.

Got a 2nd hand pair in goodish knick off trademe. Problem sorted. Trademe or wreckers for you young man!

you can get your bike shop to get you a generic aftermarket headlight that will fit with some modification. should cost around $70.
Make sure that your forks really are bent and not just twisted in the tripple clamps, you may be able to loosen a few of the triple clamp bolts and twist your forks back into place. CVheck that the axle is not bent.

    Cheers everyone.

Think I'll have to take it in somewhere to get looked at. Either Mt Eden Motorcycles or Colemans should be alright. Any idea how much it'll cost just to get looked at?

hi mate, give Chris at 'queen street motorcycles' a call on 09 3778060, he will look at it for you. sounds like your clamps are twisted, forks may be ok..!
i was recommended to him by a guy in the trade, so must be fairly good? have to ask him about prices, but to view i would imagine prob only 40 bucks, money well spent if it can save you from buying new forks!!! if you end up needing them to be straightned, the best guy is Steve at F1 eng, hamilton, 07 8476990. good luck.
