At this stage I am planning on going to the Cold Kiwi... My First!

Got the thermals just need to purchase the tent. And work out how to ride up with all my gear.

im sure one of the folk would offer up their tent. its warmer that way and means you have to carry less stuff.

I'll be coming up and a few of the rapa crew and some workmates. Went up last year (was my 1st) and had a blast. Looking forward to it

Thumbs up Been there & still doing it

Cold Kiwi *glazed eyes* first did it on a 1000 Goldwing with my brother on a sport 750. We had some issues with differing power ranges SO next year we did it on GN 250s and he was 2 up.This was at the old site. It took a few years to get used to the new site but it has grown on me. Do COLD KIWI every year now on a CX400c double air bed ,2 deck chairs,13kg tent (extra poles and pegs)and a 24X16foot tarp. Janno a sub zero sleeping bag, insulated bed roll or heavy "lilo", thermals,& woolly hat.Oh a dry tent. When you go to bed eventually DON'T got to bed fully dressed, strip off down to thermals and give the sleeping bag heat so it can heat you!!!!!! My Best COLD KIWI was the last one at the old site (on a trike),50mm snow, broke the gearbox & had to ride back to Waikaremoana with only had 3rd& 4th gears and had to stop to change gears. See you there!!!!

Thanks for that tip! I was privately thinking I'd sleep fully dressed for maximum warmth but what you say makes sense.

I'm definitely going. I've never been to a rally before - and haven't camped since I was thirteen!!

Just need to ask around and borrow a tent now.
A decent sleeping bag sounds like a good investment. Anyone got any idea of how much a subzero one will set me back?

    Sleeping Bags

Don't skimp on the sleeping bag or the air bed. Go for sub zero, large size & hollow nylon.(low maintenance) I have never been cold at COLD KIWI. In Auckland you can buy seconds in Wiarau Valley(Domminon Exporters I think) for $100-$200.

Saw a guy at Cold Duck rally who bought a tent from Warewhare for 12 bucks! Cheap enough to throw in the bin after.

I don't know how warm it would be though.

Thanks for the tip of standin on the pegs, makes a lot of sense! I had a lil 50cc four wheeler when I was little... but I was only on 2 wheeled dirt bikes for may be 5 months... most of that time was spent tryin 2 kick start them

    Few questions...
I'm usually not a light packer lol,so how do people pack all they need?
Any tips on how to strap the sleeping bag, tent and lilo down?
I'm guessing alcohol is allowed and that if it is sold on site it'd be incredibly over priced... so how do we bring it on the bikes... with every thing else

I'm really hopin I can go!! Gunna be the weekend after my bday too.... so I might just put the bday party to that weekend

Bungy cords! You'll need a pack frame and if possible a tankbag. Put everything in plastic bags incase it rains...better to be safe than sorry.
Alcohol is reasonably priced at the site but I always take a few of my own. It always amazes me how much stuff I can carry on my bike. Have a practice before the rally so you know where everything fits.

Dunno if it's available yet, but it sounds ideal for weight-restricted applications

you dont Need a pack frame, check the image I attached in the first post. backback with 2 of those foam mattresses, a tent all held on with bungies and a tank bag up front.

I bought all booze from the shop there. found it to be average enough priced.
    I went with so-drunk-dont-feel-cold option
so much so I didn't even NEED a tent, just ask the other 2005'rs I was fast asleep outside
