    Western Springs.

Western Springs may be a car track to you - but to me it's a bike track.

I was talking to someone a bit involved in the thing - there are 14 meetings this year, down from 24 last year,it's days as a city speedway track are numbered.MOTAT is taking over half the car park (I'm a MOTAT member),appartment blocks are going in down one end too, without a car park it's finished, with rich people who moved into the area knowing it was there wanting it shut down for noise - I will be sorry if the city loses this track to developers and moaners and apathetic ratepayers.

Still,I'll have my memories....I saw the best speedway riders the world has ever seen, night afer night, year after year,I had no complaints about watching sidecars, TQs and midgets either, the very best way to spend a summer saturday night.

Yeah there's been some good nights spent up there.
Good noise, good smells,Mad bastards on side cars
I still can't work out why anybody takes any notice of people that move into a city an then complain about the noise.

I grew up about a kilometer away from the Springs track. I vividly remember Saturday nights as a kid, sitting on the back porch, listening to the noise of the engines and watching the Fowlds Park gumtrees silhouetted against the lit-up clouds over the city. I loved it.

But then, there probably aren't many parents with young kids who can afford to live around there, these days.

I lived on Surrey Cres for about four years.69-74.

Malvern Rd. Other side of the motorway from Surrey Cres I think. Back of Fowlds Park, goes off Western Springs Rd. Lived there from '82 - '96.

It's funny, because my dad worked in the building Motomail's in now for several years when it was first built. I remember hanging around in that basement when I was 5 or so, looking at all the cardboard boxes of stock on shelves. And now I go in there to buy tinted visors. Small world, eh?

I can't get my head around that kind of mentality in people. I clearly remember apartments beeing built right next to Kitty obriens pub
the appartment people then complained about the pub noise--I mean Hello
To see a life newly created. To watch it grow and prosper. Isn't that the greatest gift a human being can be given?

Oh arrr. People with plenty of money and pretensions, living in built-cheap-as-possible apartments and then deciding that they have some ability to expect it to be as quiet and private as if they'd bought a 12 acre block out in Kumeu? Gimme a break.

I don't mind a bit of noise, myself, when I'm on my own, but it's the westie suburbs or back blocks for me while the kids are still living with us, TYVM. I like to be able to watch the sun out the window and hear a tui in the yard. Beats me why anyone in Auckland would live downtown-ish by choice these days.

It's the same mentality which killed the Wellington Street Race.

Why the hell live CBD if you want peace and quiet. Personally I loved living Inner City (lived on Queen St, K'Rd, Cuba St, and Cashel in Christchurch). Being able to open the door and have the hussle and bussle right there, being able to crawl home after a hard night.

If you want quiet live somewhere quiet. If you want inner city, understand that it's noisy.

MOTAT is moving out of Meola rd because acids are leaching out and rising to the surface - that place was a real dump for years remember, and planes and other equipment are getting damaged.I don't know what they will be moving to Western Springs, tough, because there's more room at Meola rd than Western Springs.
