Darryl Atkins - A Kiwi in the States:

    IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aprilia USA and Atkins Global Management Announce
    2007AMA Supermoto Championship Team
Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing and the Aprilia SXV Debut May 19

NEW YORK, May 15, 2007 – Aprilia USA and Atkins Global Management, along with a world-class roster of sponsor partners led by Rip-It Energy Drink®, have teamed up to challenge the ‘establishment’ in the 2007 AMA Supermoto Championship.

Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing team riders Ben Carlson, the 2006 AMA Supermoto Unlimited Class champion and team owner Darryl Atkins, the 2005 AMA Supermoto Unlimited Class runner-up will race the World Championship-winning Aprilia SXV 4.5 V-Twin in the Supermoto class for the first time.

Until 2007, AMA rules have only allowed multi-cylinder machines to compete in the unlimited class. For the 2007 season the V twin Aprilias will also compete in the 450 class. Wisconsin native Carlson and New Zealander Atkins will also return to contest the Unlimited Class with the Aprilia SXV 5.5, beginning with the season opener AMA Supermoto Championship races on May 29, at the St. Louis, MO Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.

“We’re really excited to expand our factory Supermoto race program for 2007,” says Rick Panettieri, brand manager, Aprilia USA. “The SXV 4.5 has proven to be very competitive in the FIM S2 Supermoto World Championship taking the title in 2006.
“All of us, from racers to sponsors, are focused on showcasing the Aprilia’s competitiveness on North American soil as well,” he says.

Aprilia’s race engineering heritage – the company has 32 on-road and off-road world championships on the books – has delivered a machine that’s designed to blend the benefits of increased horsepower with an exceptional chassis. "While the bike is heavier than the competition, the responsiveness of the SXV’s awesome chassis and the added horsepower give us a real unique advantage,” says Atkins. “We feel we maximized the 2006 season to get an in-depth understanding of this machine’s potential, and we’re excited about making the SXV as competitive on the North American circuit as it has been in the World Championship series.”

Ben Carlson cites the Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing team dynamic as another factor in the team’s favor. Former rivals, Atkins and Carlson will compete for the podium as teammates for the first time. “Darryl has been a tough competitor in the past few years and I’m happy to join forces," says Carlson. “Add the opportunity to compete on a powerful new machine like the SXV, and it’s a real adrenaline rush. You can bet that we’re committed to making the most out of these strengths every time the tires touch the track.”

The Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing team’s first outing on the SXV 4.5 and 5.5 was at the Stateline Supermoto Challenge - a season primer held in Primm, NV. Carlson took a seventh place finishing spot competing amongst some of the top riders in the 2007 AMA season, while Atkins was involved in a multi rider accident and did not finish the race.

The Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing team is sponsored by Rip-It Energy Drink, Aprilia USA, Parts Unlimited, Bel-Ray Oils, Groove wines, Thor, Scott, Alpinestar, Asterisk, Ogio, ZLT, Dunlop, Beringer Brakes, K&N Filters, Pit Bull, Suzuka, Alpina Wheels, Renthal, Mechanix Wear, Regina Chains, Works Connection, Acberis and AF1 Racing.

I had a chat to Darryl at a AnahiemSupercross i attended this year, he was very good to talk to and we discuissed supermoto in NZ for about 30min, he expressed an interest in racing at Wanganui which is cool.

he was very excited about having factory bikes this year straight out of italy, last year than ran production epuipment which caused some issues, a big problem was they were so much different to everything else they had no base points to start with,

ps you should see his wife, pretty dam hot,

Aprilia Factory Rip It Racings Ben Carlson backed up his #1 in Supermoto Unlimited plate with a second win in New Jersey.

Atkins suffers mechanical issues in the Unlimited class, with Carlson placing top ten in the Supermoto (450cc) class.

    Corona, California - 6/5/2007

Round 2 of the 2007 AMA Supermoto Championship at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey saw Ben Carlson take the top step on the podium for a second time in two races. The competition foresaw Carlson’s speed through out practice as he consistently stayed in the top positions through practice and the heat races. The European-style track, laid out on a road course featuring elevation changes and fast-flowing corners with two tricky off-road sections, clearly suited the SXV 550.

“This was an awesome win,” said an enthusiastic Carlson after the race. “I felt so good this weekend – like nothing could go wrong! The bike was working well and I’m glad it was because the way conditions were changing, we needed a reliable bike set-up no matter what. I had a good start off of pole and just put my head down – I think some of the guys up front were more conservative than me because I put fast laps in right away, and it seemed like they were not as comfortable or something.” Not that the worsening track conditions didn’t affect Carlson, he had a couple of “moments” on the track that forced him to check-up towards the end of the race. “The second dirt section started to get a real severe dip on the last landing, with a fast left hard on the gas afterwards, the inconsistent grip was tough to manage and I slipped badly a couple times.” Further into the race with a lead over ten seconds another long slide in the rain dictated an easy pace at the end – Carlson still ahead by five seconds as the checkers fell and the skies continues to darken.

Team Owner Darryl Atkins suffered increasing electrical problems throughout the day. “I am really, really disappointed,” said the New Zealand Native. “We have been making progress with all the bikes – you can see that with Bennys’ – but somewhere in the system we must have developed a small electrical short because the bike started to suffer a miss off bottom late in the morning. The crew changed what they could, but the new rules do not allow us to change chassis, and the shortened schedule (courtesy of oncoming rains) simply did not leave us time to change the main harness.” Atkins was still able to make the race and collect points towards the important team championship. “We don’t make all this effort to finish fourteenth I assure our fans. It’s so much work to make it to the track, and every race we have a line of fans outside the rig interested in the team and the bikes. I’ll keep pushing no matter what – and I want to thank our fans for coming by to say hello.”

The skies opened up further with Carlson just able to dash from the Supermoto Unlimited podium ceremonies back to the Aprilia Factpry Rip It Energy Drink pits to find his 450 just finishing a tire swap to Dunlop full-rains – the right choice as it turns out. With both the green flag and the rain falling, the pack hurtled into the first turn for the Supermoto main event. Carlson was leery of the many riders who were on the wet track for the first time and held his line. “I saw some guys really dicing and thought there would be a pile-up for sure,” said the West bend Wisconsin native. “I don’t know how everybody made it through, but they did and I was sitting about 11th place.” As the race wore on the rain continued with a visible spray off of the tires and mud starting to cake the machines. Carlson soon started battling with Kawasaki-mounted Chris Fillmore swapping positions several times. With Carlson ultimately making a pass to take tenth position, the lead pack has strung out. “I saw that I had a big lead on the guy behind me, and every time I pushed the bike was not as happy, so I decided to keep a clean line and finish the race. Carlsons’ second top ten in as many 450 class races puts him seventh in the championship.

The team will now make the long haul back to its Corona, California base for more testing and development. With tracks on the schedule that will surely be tighter and more technical, bike set-up is critical and the competition will be close in both classes. The Aprilia Factory Rip It Energy Fuels race team will compete at the next round of the AMA Supermoto championship in Toole, Utah on June 23rd the same weekend as the AMA Superbike races. With so much racing in one spot there are sure to be more fans than ever at the new facility. For more information log on to www.amasupermoto.com.

Aprilia Factory Racing Rip-It Energy Fuels throw twin shadows on the podium at Waterford Raceway

Carlson takes fourth win in a row, with Atkins just behind in an exciting race.

The Aprilia Factory Racing Rip-It Energy Fuels Supermoto race team rocked the Waterford Raceway (Detroit area) round of the AMA Supermoto series by taking a first ever one-two in the Supermoto Unlimited class. Close racing between the teammates was the order of the day, and kept the fans cheering for the V-Twin machines. “I am pumped up to take another win,” says Ben Carlson. “I know both of us felt great through the heat race where Darryl and I were one and two. Darryl definitely pushed me hard out there! That was not an easy win!”

The battle started from the green light. Carlson nailed the start and earned the hole-shot. Atkins was not as perfect on the start, with the KTM of Kurt Nicoll showing as strong as start as Carlson, but with a late braking maneuver, Atkins was into second place in turn one of the first lap. “We made some huge gains through some rigorous suspension testing,” says team owner Atkins. “Paul Thede at Race Tech has been incredibly helpful for our effort this year, and we made some chassis changes and really worked the suspension setting to get the bike even better. The chassis has always been perfect on the SXV, but we have got awesome suspension on the Aprilias now!”

As the race wore on it was clear the confidence each of the riders had in their machine, pushing each other every lap. With the sound of the booming KTM in his ears early on in the race, Atkins pushed to make time. “Soon I was catching Ben and I knew that was going to be the race,” he said. Atkins was fired up about his best showing of the season. “Ben was super-fast on the asphalt for sure. I think I had some speed on him in the dirt, but the track was a bit narrow and tough to pass on the asphalt – and it was fast too, so passing was tough anyway.” Atkins did manage to pull up next to his teammate several times in the technical Urban Cross section.

Toward the end of the race it was slower riders who would affect the proximity of the team member more than outright lap times. “We came up on four lappers racing each other right at the end of the race,” says Carlson. “It was a gamble but I chose to dive inside and try to clear though – but they did slow my pace a bit.” “I thought I could get Ben right at the end there – I knew they might affect things, I started to go around the outside, but my ‘Team Manager’ voice popped up and told me to bring it home!” Atkins chose to not risk the pass and dropped back for a safe second place behind his team-mate.

Both riders were quick to credit their mechanic Amauri Nunez for his hard work both in the pits and preparing for each race. Nunez has been responsible for engine and chassis maintenance for both riders with assistance on race weekends. “The bikes were absolutely perfect this race,” says Atkins. “Between the suspension work, the ideal fuel injection set-up and the core qualities of the Aprilia, I know Ben and I were 100% confident in everything this race, and that is the highest compliment we can pay Amauri.”

Atkins elected to withdraw from the 450 class due to a limited tire budget, allowing Carlson the best shot at a competitive set-up in the AMA Supermoto Championship class. “The 450 engine is pretty good on overall power, but the other factory 450s’ are really developed and quick out of tight corners – so I knew I had my work cut out.”

Carlson tried to nail the start and make an aggressive move to move up from his 8th place qualifying position. “My start was pretty good, but didn't quite match the guys up front. In the race I had a couple lappers to deal with, and I just ended up trying to run consistent laps.” Carlson ran almost identical laps but was held up mid-race and settled for maintaining his 8th place position, finishing more than ten seconds ahead of his pursuer. “We have some work to do on the 450’s. but I am confident that we will soon echo the success we have had in the Unlimited class events.”
