    Fecking insurance. Grrr

Well, what a shock (aka how green am I)?????

After my wee lie down a few months ago (yes I am recovering nicely thank you ), it occurred to me that I may as well claim my gear replacement from my contents insurance. I have been with this particular company since Adam was cowboy and as many of you are aware, this is BC territory and more than just a few moons ago!! So anyway, this is my first time and so I am bit naïve (ok ok REALLY naïve as it turns out) ….

Anyways – I talk to the young lass on the phone and she was very polite and helpful … YES by all means you can claim, I can see that you are an ‘old’ and valued customer … How about I send you out a form and you send it directly back to me and I will ensure that it gets processed ok.

True to her word, she rung me back today to tell me that my claim for replacement of my top of the line shoei helmet, codura jacket, boots and jeans is….

    $950 dollars!!

    WTF?

(sigh) Now I not only do not have a bike to ride - but I don't have any gear either

Please tell me if you guys/gals have a better policy and who with?

That sucks. We are with AMI and have nothing but good service (so far) but also haven't had any major claims. A couple of windscreens is about it. How can they justify that figure? The helmet would be worth more than that alone wouldn't it? Ring their head office and bitch your lungs out.

Unfortunately clothing is insured at 'Indemnity Value' and you will have to deduct the excess as well. You can contest/get-an-alternative valuation.

Depending on who your bike insurance was with, you may be able to claim against that on the one excess though.

I thought I had read here somewhere that ACC may payout on your safety gear...If anyone else can shead some light on that subject.

    No they won't
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Hello - I'm a bit new at this. I work in a bikeshop - Whitelock Suzuki in Wanganui, used to work in insurance and ACC so a coupla things to bear in mind...
The settlement for clothing with any Insurance Company will be indemnity (please don't rant at me about whether this is fair or not - I'm just telling you how it is) and was with ACC as well. All companies base their settlement on the 2nd hand value of the items - so what they think you would get if you tried to sell them when they have had some use.

You have probably had an excess deducted as well (say $100.00 to $250.00 under a contents policy) and this has reduced the settlement to you. You probably had an excess for your motorcycle claim too and have ended up paying 2 excesses (one for the bike, and one for the contents - I could be wrong about this) and this is the reason why I wanted to contact you.

Before I launch in about the insurance I do here, just an aside about ACC. ACC used to pay out for clothing but they don't anymore. Their settlements also were market value but had no excesses.

The insurance I do here is for over 30 year olds with clean driving records and locked garages. It is a specialist motorcycle policy thru Classic Cover (Vero Insurance). The main points to note that included in the cover is $2500.00 for motorcycle related clothing (helmet, gloves, boots, armoured jacket, armoured pants) and $1500.00 for accessories/spares (aftermarket pipes, panniers etc). You can opt to have Roadside Assistance for an extra $25.00 and pay the premiums off over 3 months at no extra cost. If your bike is a new one and gets stolen or written off in the the 1st 12 months of its' life, you get a replacement bike - no market value/depreciated settlement there.

I sell Classic Cover right around the country - I sell it with confidence because the premiums and excess are very competitive. 3 of my clients have claimed and they were complimentary about the claims service provided. I keep my finger on the pulse for my clients too, and sort out any hassles they may have.

I can't get you away from a depreciated settlement for clothing but I can help with the 2 excesses for the one accident situation. You con't need to claim on your contents policy for your clothing because it is covered automatically up to $2500.00 with your motorcycle insurance.

Anyway, insurance is quite boring so I wont go on and on, but if you would like a quote, and a fuller description of the cover, please contact me at sue@whitelocksuzuki.co.nz

I hope I am allowed to do this type of thing on the Kiwi Website? let me know if I am not.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Sue

I heard that they used to replace damaged helmets but stopped because too many riders would scrape them on the road deliberately just to get the latest model.

Yep me too. First claim I have ever made in (cough cough) years. And no - will not cover the replacement retail price of the helmet let alone anything else.

Yeah I understand that they have not done this for a number of years now.

Thanks - but no point preaching to the converted My previous two bikes were insured through Classic Cover and although I never had call to claim on the policies, they were very helpful and incredibily competitively priced. As mentioned previously, the bike was not mine and therefore not covered.

    Insurance

We had some lowlife wanker smash our drivers window on our car couple of years ago, they grabbed radar detector(hard wired),would've got stereo but alarm went straight away, woke up to alarm and sound of feet running around the corner of section.
Next day contacted insurance company, get everything replaced asap was reply.New window ex Auckland was possible Friday afternoon, meant 2 days with plastic sheet and not secure enough for me.
Rang insurance back,we can get secondhand one from New Plymouth this afternoon and installed as well.Go ahead was reply but if it's badly scratched we'll put new one in asap.

Window was ok so asked insurance seeing as we have taken cheaper option on window will you waive excess on radar detector and a ring and bracelet taken (was anniversary pressy that day, never even got chance to see look on her face, bastards),as they came under contents of house,no problem at all was reply.
