You may well be VERY surprised as Youthstream has a huge coverage!! And I would expect it to be bigger than America's Cup.
Yes... its actually tens of millions... I am contacting each and every one to confirm right now as we speak...

Youthstream... maybe... but they don't have the big bucks to spend when travelling...

The Tax money this populist Govt is spending on America's Cup and the Rugby Cup is just another vote catching strategy.

That is why minority sports like ours will never get a look in.

So you reckon viewers of America's Cup have lotsa money. Then I'd better start watching the boring bloody thing.

Yep... motoX pulls in crowds and fills those massive stadiums all the time...

Tried that too, didn't work. But checked out the super yachts in the Viaduct last time round... They were not motoX supporters. As far as I could tell, I think they might possibly have been there for the yachting... Call me crazy...

Haven't seen any super yachts arrive for any dirt bike event...

OK Patrick, you have given us your theories - now give us some facts.

    Check out this from Youthstream.

Average number of TV audience world wide per event

    2005 - 34 million

    2006 - 39.5 million

    http://www.motocrossmx1.com/default....e=news&id=1190

And this is worth a read if you are still with us.

What economic impact did the Americas cup last held in NZ on me or hundreds of thousands of other NZ public, 5/5ths of fuck all

But like I said before - I am quite sure that it is more about votes.

Heard an interesting theory the other day - that NZ actually does better from having a strong presence in a European venue than from bringing it home. When it's there, it's in the right timezone for more people to watch it on TV, and more people can get there to watch in person. And it's fairly obvious to anyone who does watch it that NZers are pretty good at it, even if the national team doesn't actually win - since we're on all the boats, both as crew and providing equipment, anyway.

So I guess you will agree that Josh is doin a great job for NZ. 30.5 million (on '06 figures) viewing the Kiwi keep the red plate. And in the right time zone.

Not bad, but TV audience for the Americas Cup was estimated at over 100 million viewers... per race!!! The Chinese boat would have pulled that many in alone, even though it was a dog... but it did beat Oracle!!

The crowds on the wharves were put at 70000. Not including that which was out on the water...

And again I say... visit the Viaduct Basin next time the cup is here and try and tell me wealth hasn't come to town... I'll keep an eye out for the motor racers super yachts, but haven't seen any yet...

Agreed... but how about Golf... Can get funny when someone slices off a shot and it smacks some dozey prick in the head in the crowd...

Also - let's look at it like this.... $10m spent on the America's cup... that's $2.50/New Zealander.

Let's assume it's a total nett loss... you're bitching and moaning about $2.50?

Not really considering the position we've been in in the last few regattas... besides... risk and return. No risk = no yield. I'd prefer the country to risk a bit and make some dosh...

10mil is just to (perhaps) keep the team together. It's a bottomless pit! What say they just ask for donations. Then I can decide if I want to contribute. lol

Problem is you can't opt out of the benefits too.... they're too hard to quantify.

Eg - a boatbuilder gets more wore from the cup coming to NZ (as it previously has).. they get more money, they take on more staff, and those staff now have more money too. They come to you and buy your goods 9or use your services) and now you have more money too... the trickle down is working, but you have no way of knowing exactly how much better off you are.

When a prospective sailor asked an oldtimer what it would cost to go sailing he was told "If you need to ask, you can't afford it".

That doesn't affect Helen and Mallard of course.
