    Help connecting old hard drives.

Recently my mobo blew up in an o/cing experiment.

I am borrowing a computer from magua for the time being until i get a new one myself.

I want to use my old hard drives to get my mp3's, and before I've just plugged em in and they were there.

This is not the case how ever, I get some weird thing on start up saying

"sec slave is not atapi compatible"

If it is possible i'd like to boot off my old hard drive so i can play my games, have my auto cad etc etc.

No idea what info you guys need so plz just ask and you will recivce.
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot

Get an external case, USB connect (2.5" are powered via the USB, 3.5" have external power supply needed).

    Plug and play!

The one in the example is very pricey... I got a 2.5" one for $30... I'll take a look at the little shop down the road. PM me your number and I'll ring and let you know.
$2,000 cash if you find a buyer for my house, kumeuhouseforsale@straightshooters.co.nz for details

You possibly may have damaged the hard drive. Does it smell? Does it spin up when the computer turns on?

The first thing to try is plugging [B]just[B] the suspect hard drive into one of the IDE cables and see if that works. If that works make sure you have One Master & One slave per cable. You possibly have two slaves?
Life is difficult because it is non-linear.

and honstly you don't want to boot of your old hdd, with your old install of windows.

But there be some pin settings on the back of hdd, you need to set it to slave, there will be a label on the hdd telling you about 'master' 'slave' 'cable select'

Yeah, get it set to master, or cable select, to get it working 100% you would actually need the identical motherboard, I know ain't gonna happen. other option is to use a utility that MS produces that allows driver changes with a master image (can't remember the name) along with Acronis Snap-Depoy (google it), this basically means time and money, but you would end up with the same install on a different computer. -and also another computer. -and someone who knows what they are doing.

better solution is to get the external hard drive and new hard drive, install windows on new hard drive, copy important info from old hard drive, love a new install and the speed it brings, I know things might be tight, but instead of getting a new hard drive off TardMe, go to your local dealer and sweet talk them into lending you one of their external hard drives when you buy a hard drive off them. oh, and partition your new drive soyou don't need to poxy round with this next time, there will be a next time. Mibby stating the obvious but don't connect any other devices to the same IDE channel you have the drive hooked up to. You'll maybe need to shag around with the BIOS settings too (some older mobo's need LBA set). Check the mobo you're using recognises large drives.

Don't shag around with overcooki..sorry..overclocking again.

i'll try over clocking when i get an awesome pc, with better cooling etc, i made the noob mistake of putting it up too much at 1 go.

So far im booting off my hdd, but my mp3 hdd is not there any more Its the only one on the channel etc

    It probably won't work

    Why?

Because the drivers on your hard disk are for a certain mobo, and your current mobo might have a different chipset. Even if it doesn't, XP will detect that there has been a significant hardware change and have a cry. Your best bet is either an enclosure, as someone stated, or use a linux Live CD to copy files -

Silly question, but have you tried resetting the bios on the mobo?
I had a nasty near miss myself a couple of weeks ago but resetting the bios via the jumper brought the comp back to life.

LOL, some funny replies. hehe, mobo drivers and chipset, external disks, and the best of all, does it smell...lol, check to see if flames are coming off it when you boot, Should still work, but it maybe hot, and a bit smelly apparently.

Assuming the disk isnt fragged, the jumper settings are wrong...
First, make sure the fire is out, then change the jumper settings on the disk to slave.
You may have to change the cables around a bit, IDE1 to master, daisy changed to slave and the cd to IDE2.
FINE. This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

not possible, unless 1, you have the exact same hardware as before or 2, access to some very nice software (read expensive as well).

As for plugging it in, as an extra drive, as others have said, you have to set the jumper, it will be between the ide cable and the molex power connector. This can be set in a variety of ways. Basically, there are 2. Either, each hard drive is set by jumper, as master, master only, master with slave present, slave, etc.

Other option is to set the jumper to cable select. This means it goes according to which plug from the ide cable is plugged in. Each ide cable has a master and a slave, and one ide slot on the mobo is primary, next is secondary etc. Your primary drive has to be on the primary slot, master plug on cable, then other drives file on, as slaves, secondary masters, etc.

Sata is sooo nice and easy
