the filter will only have 2 crappy hose clamps on it... wasting your money going to a bike shop... get some pliers and maybe a screwdriver

Mine had a bit more than two crappy hose clips on it. The worst problem I had was that my hoses were a little rotten and tore apart when trying to pull apart.

Tis not overly difficult to remove the tank to get at the pump and filter assembly which is definitely easier than trying to attack it while on the bike!

Actually sounds like you ran out of petrol though if you ask me. When you switched to reserve it took a while to get going???? Cos it takes a bit to get the petrol up to the carbies and enough to then get the thing going again. But if it ran fine once going then you either ran outta gas or the inlet (in the tank) was blocked and by switching to reserve used the other fuel inlet. This being not as likely in my opinion.

I had that similar prob its the petrol, pump, and filter to be checked.

I can tell when my bike is about to run out of fuel when the fuel pump gets loud cause its pumping air not petrol. Try filling the tank!

FZ's are known for fuel pump probs, take it out (you can bypass it for now) take the plastic cover off and you will see a points system... it's more than likely a wire has fallen off or the wire on the top (should be insulated away form the plastic end cap) is earthing.
When/if you bypass connect directly from tank to to carb... and keep your tank over 1/2 full all the time, or you'll be riding very slow for ling long time.

I only know this because two friends of mine have had these problems with FZ's (over & over again)
