    I reckon I'm NZ's top Kiwi Biker!

I'm staying with my parents north of Houhora for a while. Is there any KBer north of me? If not, that makes me New Zealand's top Kiwi Biker! Mwahaha world domination is mine!

If there are any KBers in Kaitaia, or anyone heading north to Cape Reinga, drop me a line and I would love to catch up for a coffee at the new Mount Camel Roadhouse on SH1 (opens today), or the Houhora Heads Waterfront Cafe or even the Waitiki Landing cafe (if you're really desperate for bad coffee).

Unfortunately I don't have my bike or gear with me but I could really really do with getting out of the house and meeting some real people! Isolation does that to you!

So if you want to meet the country's top Kiwi Biker, drop me a PM. I will send you my mobile number... even though mobile phones don't work this far north

hmmm... an interesting and surprisingly complex question, Mack.

First, I was working. As you know, I'm single-handedly responsible for sealing the road from Waitiki Landing to Cape Reinga - just me and my wheelbarrow.
OK so that was a wee bit of an exaggeration... I also have a shovel

I flew up here on Tuesday 10 July for a meeting in the middle of all that crazy weather and risked life and limb to fly out of Kaitaia that night because all the roads were closed. The following morning I got a call to say my Dad (who is terminally ill) needed me, so I hopped back on a plane and came back here. Bumpiest flight I've ever had.

So here I am in the middle of nowhere, staying with my Mum and Dad, trying to keep everyone cheerful, positive and on an even keel. Meanwhile I'm going totally nuts!

The only thing that will make me feel better is to meet some KBers... because I know that in comparison to most of you wierdos I will seem perfectly normal

So where the bloody hell are you?

You aren't totally nuts. I found some more.

Poor you with your Dad being terminally ill. My father and I looked after my Mum at home until her death (MS) and it was the best thing we could have done - very healing, funnily enough. Because you feel so helpless that you can't fix the problem, but the one thing you can do is care for them at home and surround them with love. Like we all used to in the old days.

I'm not a big fan of shunting people off to hosp to die if you can possibly avoid it. Though for some people there is no choice, I understand that.

It's hard when it's all happening, but you won't regret any of this time later on. What a bugger you couldn't put your bike in the cargo hold, though.

ha ha ha thanks for the extra nuts, janno!

Yeah, I'm cherishing this time with my Dad. He's one of the world's truly lovely people. Unfortunately he's drugged up to the eyeballs at the moment but I know that's what he needs. I just make the most of his lucid moments and try to find that balance between caring for him and allowing him to retain as much dignity as possible.

In the end, I love my Dad and I know that's all that really matters.

Yeah it is. I'm involved in the project to seal the last remaining stretch of SH1 between Cape Reinga and Waitiki Landing (starting at the cape and working south). There will be some MARVELLOUS roads up there once it's all sealed. Already the road as far as Waitiki Landing is great for bikes. By 2010 it will be fantastic!

Please note that all official communications about the project include at least one reference to motorbikes. All my own work
