Replica/deactivated firearms?

Do any of our members, in particular those into "gun culture" or of the legal pursasion know much about the laws around deactivated or replica firearms?

I was thinking the other day it'd be really cool to have a deactivated or realistic replicas some restricted weapons (sawn off shotgun, uzi, grenade came to mind) to display on the loungeroom wall alongside all my knives. Would that be legal?

Does that mean its legal to discharge an airgun at my house as long as I'm not endangering, annoying, or frigthening people or property? Like could I legally shoot a possum, or targets on my property (urban, not rural) with an airgun as long as it wasnt endangering anyone?

I can't see the SafetyNazis allowing that. I'm sure 'they' will say, "But what if ..."

A guy I worked with had the brilliant idea years ago (luckily for him, before 7/11 and all that hooplah) of bringing back a replica flintlock pistol from the UK for his son. He said afterwards he'd never have done it if he'd realised what an absolute nightmare it would be going through (several lots of) customs.

Don't go waving them about in the street... even a gun looking object is enough to go down town.

Get some Tokyo Marui and other high quality brand soft air weapons. They're virtually indistinguishable from the real things in many cases, especially mounted behind glass.

i have heard of cops being called out to little kids playing with cap guns in town!

id love a fake but realistic tommy gun. held one a few years back, and loved the feel!

If it can't physically fire a round (within reason) is it legally a firearm ?
Isn't it just sculpted wood/steel ?

A bit. Any firearm that has been certified as "inoperable" is then just an ornament.
A friend had his grandfathers revolver hanging on the wall. If you removed it from its mounting you would see that all of the non-seen side, had been milled and welded to make it totally useless!

Yes. It is an "ornament". However, any item "resembling" a firearm could be seen in the worst possible light if in the "wrong place at the wrong time" !

Debateable... Urban might be a bit of a "bother" if you are seen by anyone...

Happens more often than people realise. If it "looks" like a gun then it IS one!

I dont think, "It is not breaching any of the above rules" would apply unfortunatly. Reason being is that you cannot prove in all cases you know if the bullet will stop inside the target or where it will end up if you miss.

Hence rule 5 of the 7 basic rules, Always check your firing zone. Just because there is no one in front of you doesnt mean a richocet cant hit them. There is a vid on the net of someone firing a rifle prone and the round richoceing and dusting up 5 feet in front of him

I have got a deactivated 22 you can have.

I was riding along on my XT looking for bunnies to shoot for the dog with it on my back.

I saw a possum on the track and formed a mental image of a booted possum flying through the air in a graceful arc.

Booted the possum. Deactivated foot, right leg, motorbike and 22.

Possum ran away, (laughing ?)

It was 20 years ago and the foot still hurts on cold nights.
