    Some amateur knife porn

A new toy arrived by UPS last night.

I ordered it a while ago, as a present for someone who left a somewhat more metaphorical knife in my heart immediately thereafter.

My collection of pocket folders has, therefore, just grown by one.

It's a Kershaw Rainbow Leek. Handle and blade of Sandvik 13C26, plated with titanium oxide. I've always had a soft spot for 'rainbow' knives made this way, and finally I own one!

Ken Onion's 'assisted opening' design (activated by pressure on the small knurled knob at the top of the handle) is gorgeous in its simplicity and effectiveness. This is the fastest-opening knife I've tried yet.

I'm surprised, in fact, that the sprung action doesn't qualify it as an auto ('switchblade'). I had no difficulty importing it. Perhaps the fact that the blade rotates out of the handle rather than springing straight forward is the differentiator?

As you can see below, that highside on SH16 two weeks ago means that I won't be using it left-handed for a while!

I don't plan on carrying this one, though - it's not a boy's knife. It will live in its pouch in a drawer, awaiting a worthy bearer. It will, however, be granted the usual baptism in goat's blood in a couple of week's time alongside my new Norinco M305.

I'm quite tempted to betray my Spyderco loyalties and add a Kershaw Storm to my collection very shortly, which definitely will be on the daily carry rotation. Any other Kershaw fans out there on KB?

My favorite has always been me trusty Mercator. Had it since I was 13, lost it a few times and always found it again.

WOW...That is a very nice toy!!!

Would love to have a collection, but always it wasn't such a good idea with my boy around.
I've already given him the "bikey bug", so getting him to have a knife fetish as well...

Very nice indeed! Brent Sandow in Auckland does some very nice folders too, either as a commission or from stock. See:www.brentsandowknives.com.

I commissioned him to make me a Damascus Steel carving knife last year, post: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...ad.php?t=37146. Cost me nearly $900, but the work that goes into layering a Damascus blade is phenomenal. Now a family heirloom.

Great to see that you appreciate fine workmanship.

Very pretty! [Is that the right word to describe a knife?]
If you were to call that a flick-knife as opposed to a switchblade, then that would be illegal I think.
However, it is obviously not a street thug weapon so who knows?

    Scandalous hussy!

Don't worry, I'll be sure to bring it along on my next ride up north for you to have a play with.

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention in my original post that the Rainbow Leek won Blade Magazine's 'Overall Knife of the Year' award when the design was released in 2002. It feels lovely in the hand. I'd say it'd be a great general-use cutter, although I'd never use it for that; Kershaw make Leeks with other handle and blade materials for such pedestrian purposes.
