    Insuring an old car

Anybody had any experience with restoring an old car and obtaining insurance?
I have finally got my 1960 Ford 107E on the road, revinned, reregistered and running nicely although still needing a lot of work on the body. So I phoned my insurance company (AA) to arrange third-party insurance. I thought it would be simple, but they wouldn't do it - said I had to belong to a vintage car club and also have the car garaged, and generally seemed very reluctant. Tried State - even worse: the story there was that they wouldn't insure it until it was fully restored - body, upholstery, everything. WTF??? This is 3rd party only - what difference does it make whether it's a 1960 or a 1990 car, as long as it's roadworthy and legal??
Can anybody suggest a company or broker that might be more reasonable?
    Thanks.

P.S. I haven't gone completely over to the dark side. Still ride my 2 bikes as much as possible...

Look up 'Insurance Broker' in the yellow pages - or look in Petrolhead mag, Classic Car mag etc and phone a few insurance brokers, you'll get a good deal.
I use Insurance Brokers Alliance Ltd which have an office down here - never had to claim but my HD insurance dropped by about 45% and they also gladly insured my much modified '55 F100 and my totally unmodified '66 Thunderbird etc.

    And that's full cover too.

Thanks for that. Have emailed Classic Cover but no reply as yet.
Scumdog, your company sounds interesting but they don't appear to be represented in Auckland which could be a hassle. Still if Classic Cover doesn't come to the party I'll try Brokers Alliance.

NAC are the best insurance ever.

With my shit driving history 3rd party for my car is 300 a year.

NAC speicalise in boy racer / under 25/ performance/ rare/ oddball / classic / no one else will insure you type insurance. and are the cheapest I've ever found
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot

Try getting a classic policy though AMI.

I had a 1973 Datsun 160J with bigger motor/mags/lowered etc insured through them with 8 grand full cover for $85 per year.

However youll only qualify if your not too young, the car isnt too modded and you have other vehicles to prove it wont be used every day. No mileage limits though.

Thanks for all the suggestions and particularly those who sent me pms. As it happens the day after I posted my query I got a call from AA Insurance to tell me they had had a change of heart and would insure the car after all. 3rd party only for the time being for about $90.
    So I'm a happy chappy.
Now I need to decide whether I can afford to spend $700 on having the bumper bars rechromed...
