Speedo issues

Hello,

I just recently had my alarm installed (at one of gijoe1313's spanner nights). We had lots of issues with the wiring, fuses blowing etc, due to my bike having 'custom' wiring. Finally got it all sorted, put it all back together.

I went to the petrol station, filled up, and then hopped on the motorway, and glanced down at my clocks, and my speedo was reading 0km/h. I rode home by keeping the revs at ~7,000 in 6th which I know is around 100km/h. Tripmeter and Odometer no longer work.

What could it be? I've taken the side fairing off and given the cable a good prod, but at the moment I do not have the tools to take off the speedo cable (it is one of the ones that is hooked into the gearbox).

I've checked all the fuses, and they are sweet as. Anyone have ANY ideas on what could it be? Any help appreciated.

EDIT: I just unscrewed the cable from the speedo housing and moved the bike around slowly. It's not spinning at all. I presume I need a new one?

It is most likely the speedo cable, the commnly break at the gearbox end. Take it off and have a look. Otherwise it gets more complicated as its either the drive in the gearbox, or the speedo itself. Do the cheap stuff first - check out the cable.

I will do so when I have access to the tools, which will probably be on tuesday or wednesday.

When I do take it apart, what do I look for?

Well, take the cable off the bike completely. Turn one end of the cable with your fingers, and see if the other end of the cable moves. If it's the same type of cable that I've seen, you can actually pull out the cable inner and you'll quickly be able to see if it's stuffed.

The sort of speedo cables that I'm thinking of are pretty cheap. Maybe $30, $40. You may be able to get just the inner replaced (custom job) if the whole cable is exorbitantly priced.

The NC35 RVF400 speedo cable cost about $35. I reckon it will cost about the same for your CBR400. But as they have said checked the cables first.

Hmm, driven off the GBox? make sure the little tag that sticks out the end lines up with the notch that it screws into.

I'm pretty sure it is the cable, since when installing the alarm we were fucking about with the loom behind the gauges. Maybe something gave. It was working fine on the way to spanner night, crapped out after I left.

I'll post back (with pictures hopefully) when I get the tools to open up the housing on the gearbox end.

Cyclespots Takapuna. Give them a ring before shooting up there. Hang on here is the funny part you might have to take the speedo cable off and check if it is from a Honda part since your fronts are off an suzuki.

Once you know the honda/suzuki thing the cables are pretty easy to get a hold of (Yes, I do know this from experience ><)

When mine broke I rang around to find about getting an inner made but that was going to be more expensive than getting a whole new part. So unless you have a cable making kit, I would say it would be worth getting a whole cable.

(Also, did you take off the wheel at all? Strange question i know, but you were at GI Joes, with a spanner, so it IS possible :P:P Then you have to make sure the speedo drive is pointing in the right direction. That is what I found out!)

We were at GIJoes place and we only removed the front top fairing. We did not touch the wheel at all except to admire breakaways upside down forks from a RGV250 beautifully mounted to his CBR400. It must be a cable somewhere at the back of the instrument panel that has gone loose I think.

Touching the wheel on Breakaway's bike isn't a problem, as the cable comes from the gearbox on his bike rather than the front wheel.

I didn't realise those were RGV250 forks -- very nice!

Yeah, I don't think it's an issue with something coming loose. Because I actually removed the cable from the back of the speedo, and moved the bike around a bit, and the cable didn't spin at all. I'll take it all apart soon, and see what's up and report back with pics.

The rest of the cable is in good condition.

So all I need is a new inner?

Or has a piece of it actually broken off and still in the sleeve?

Chances are the rest of it is still in there, but that should still be able be removed.

You may also want to try Atomic bike wreckers in Takapuna - Spence made up a new inner for my NC30's cable when it broke, can't remember what it cost sorry
