Headlight issue

ive got a gsxr 600 k1 01 took for a wof on da weekend failed on head light having wrong cut off pattern the guy doing the wof said its quite often on the suzuki's cause they are u.s assembled dose any one no how 2 fix it with out changeing the head light

My advice dude. Set up the headlight as best you can by adjusting it and go someplace else for a WOF.Your only other option is another headlight

Never tried it but maybe look on ebay or US forums? See if a US rider has the reverse of your predicament and swap? Good luck.

i had the same problem with my last bike, wof guy gave me a wof and said it wouldnt pass again ended up trading it on the rocket so its somebody elses problem now

Have you priced the h/lamp? The price could scare you.
Like the other dude said try somewhere else - remember though
the fail is on the WOF system so others will know.

I did a bit of reading about this kind of thing when I started looking for a nice cheap headlight and inevitably ended up on eBay looking at listings from the US.

The problem is, is that up until recently, the US had very strict rules on headlights. One of the results of this, is that they predominantly use old-style `sealed beam' headlights, with the non-replaceable globes, etc. Whilst in Europe and Asia (and here of course) we use the much better H4 style. US has updated its rules now, but H4 is still officially a no-no, although they have a very similar standard set-up.

There are still big differences, whether you are talking about the sealed beam or new US standard compared to H4. The relevant point is that H4 has a very sharp and clear beam cut-off. The US standards have a much more vague, indistinct cut-off -- and many of the sealed beam headlights are completely symmetrical.

I also doubt your chances of finding a GSXR600 with European headlight specs in the US. They're sold new in the US -- also the headlights in them aren't nice and round and can be transferred from bike to bike; you need a GSXR600 headlight.


Now I read somewhere on this site a long time ago that if you're very careful with some sandpaper (or was it a Dremel?) that you can alter the cut-off of the lens (make it symmetrical). Probably not terribly wise, but maybe a last-ditch effort.

I just had the same problem today with my New Zealand new 1992 Kawasaki GPZ500. It must've passed over 30 WOFs with the same headlight but VTNZ said it needs a new bit of glass with the opposite pattern. Will adjusting it help much or am I just going to have to pay another 30 something bucks somewhere a bit more reasonable?

It should never have been complied like that, presuming it wasn't replaced after compliance for some reason. Asymmetrical headlights must only rise to the left in NZ because we drive on the left.

Believe some get away with it by turning the bulbs in the housing just a tad (removing a bit of each of the tabs/bending them)... might be a myth but worth googling

This is exactly what we used to do when converting F150's to righthand drive.
Vtnz complied them everytime.

I think you will find that other WOF testers will know you failed but they will not know what you failed the WOF for.
I could be wrong but thats what I have been told.I,d try somewhere else.

Would this be any different than just using the adjusters already there or do they not go far enough?

The adjusters raise & lower and pan the beam, not twist it.

The only way that twisting the bulb in the holder would work is if an untrained eye picked an asymmetric light as being symmetrical by failing to notice the clear V-pattern.
