I remember being told that the bible also mentions that you cannot eat fish with no scales and meat from animals with a split hoof (pork), it comes from the old testiment, my grandfather showed it to me in the bible when he was preaching to me one day

You got it right. All meat had to be properly bled and the blood poured out on the ground symbolising the returning of the life of the animal to God. It was reiterated in the Mosaic law and again after Christ as a requirement upon Christians, as were a few of the laws despite the Mosaic Law being done away with and no longer in force. Blood, either animal or human was not to be eaten/drunk under any circumstances as it was the "life of the organism" and belonged to the source an giver of life.

    Sorry, off topic!

As you were! Had a nice casserole last night, even if I say so myself. I'm not a bad cook!

Apparently you're allowed to keep slaves too (although if you blind them or knock their teeth out you have to let them go...)

“A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer” (Proverbs 29:19). “And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye’s sake. And if he smite out his manservant’s tooth, or his maidservant’s tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth’s sake” (Exodus 21:26-27).

    Sounds reasonable I guess...

He was referring to the Mosaic Law which contained certain requirements for the Jews. As noted above, the Mosaic LAw was fulfilled and done away with by Christ's death though some principles and laws were reiterated for Christians. The Apostle Peter was shown by vision, that from that time onwards "anything goes" pretty much. Acts 10"11-16.

    Oops, done it again!

Anyway, sorry back on topic for me... just thought I would mention that.

Anyway so if you take the bible literally, it shows that man have been eating meat since the beginning of time

    I can be funny...

But yep, pretty much. Since the time of Noah anyway. It seems that up to then man was vegetarian with fish as a possibility and as one poster pointed out, we are very well suited to eat fruit. One can do well on a vegetarian diet, and contrary to one poster, the vegetables available were not always limited in variety and quantity. Certainly through the dark and middle ages a vegetarian diet would have been rather hazardous I would think. Actually, life itself was rather hazardous then...

Why, if one goes by scripture, God created man with the purpose of being soley vegetarian but approved red meat after the flood makes for an interesting debate, but what cannot be argued is that we do very well eating meat if it wasn't in the design brief to start with. One would doubt that God would instruct Noah to eat meat if it wasn't going to be good for him...In fact certain proteins are said to be much more easily utilised by the body coming from meat.

Since both my wife and I are omnivorous, I can't say what difference it would make to sex were one of us was a vegetarian...

(See I CAN keep to the topic...sorta...)

"to kill or slaughter inhumanly or barbarously."<--- said by toaster ages ago in the thread...

toast, thats how i see meat farms killing the animals... so to me its murder... maybe not to you.. but thats MY view of it...

and as for the bible... well, genesis is probably not how it happened...
    just as a general comment..

but i believe in evolution more than i believe what the bible says in the respects to homo sapiens eating meat... they evolved to eat it coz it was more energy efficient (though they were homo habilis *i think it was that* at the time they discovered bone marrow from left over kills was like some sort of energy elixir) instead of eating tons of veges to get the same amount of energy...

agreed it does say that in chapter 9, but with blood sacrifices in chapter 4... why else would they keep herds of sheep? Surely some of it was for eating?

Genesis 9:4 "But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood"

so if it is still breathing/alive, blood is still pumping through its veins... don't eat it... wait till it is dead...

Mmmmmm, fried in beef dripping until it's all crispy on the outside

Used to get it served up occasionally at home, never knew what it was until I was older. Still have it occasionally although I'm not a rabid fan.

Think it's still part of the staple diet in the English midlands.
