    Drop in centre

I was talking to a friend yesterday and she wants to set up a drop in centre for kids and teens who need it but we can't do it alone my main reason for this thread is to see if KB has advice or would support this venture be it with donating money or food, this will be a non-profit venture but the costs involved will be high in the set up phase

any advice will be appricated and no doubt used

    Cheers
    Dan

    What a fantastic idea!!
We had one of these in Coromandel when I was living there as a teenager and it was fantastic, kept us all off the streets drinking and smoking weed. If I lived in Auckland I'd offer my time and services, however the best I can do is to offer you my best wishes and say good luck!

A drop in centre is a place where kids and teens can go when they have no place else to go or just need time out they can just "drop in" and be feed and take showers. It also takes them off the streets where if they stayed there might cause mischief

Christ - sounds like my place... Having daughters I seem to get infestations of males... Nothing like finding a shaved yeti in your shower or fridge to make dad a happy camper...

Go for grants - there are always some on offer. Not sure where you are but the Hamilton City council puts out a book each year for $15 and it lists ALL the grants available for the year - check if your local council has something similar. It's a fairly hefty book and you might find that your council gives out grants each month (Waikato District council for example does).
Yes it does involve a bit of work, but compared with the hassle and time spent on say a sausage sizzle, it is well worth it.
And youth is an easy thing to get money for.
Also you will need to apply to the IRD for non profit status as most grant givers will need evidence of this.
Find someone who wants to help do this as opposed to say working with the kids - in fact I do this a lot for certain groups.
."No Matter what you do there will be critics."

Apathy - I could take it or leave it...

You could also approach the Lotteries Comission and maybe the appropriate ministry could advise. Check this from 'beehive.govt.nz'..."The New Zealand Lottery Grants Board will distribute over $171 million to the community and statutory bodies in the coming year – almost $50 million more than last year,” said Rick Barker.

You could contact Barker's office for advice on how to apply for some of that money.....
    Good on ya, go hard.
