    Race formula

ive been mixing my own ( FOR *ahem* off road use only) fuel for awhile now ..

my basic formula is 50% 105 Octane leaded from the BP in KOOOMEEEOOOOO.. 50% Mobile 98 and about 1/3 litre of Acetone to fire up the flame front .. works a treat but i think there is more to be had out of it ..

im looking ( so far to no avail) for a litre of MTBE (Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether ) to pump some oxygen into the mix... any ideas? ( fuck the tree huggers)

hey . also .. i heard there was a place in the Dorkland CDB or close that sells race gas .. any ideas on that one?

( 14.3: 1 compression.. cant really deal with pump gas...

(Tech Note .. always make sure you let your machinist know what pistons you are putting in before he machines your head)

Race gas is sold at the challenge gas station just down from the puke track, however, "race" gas sold at such stations is just stale av gas and is an unreliable octane. Go to Ardmore airport for fresh stuff if it's still open, been a few years since I went there..

the BP stuff at Kumeu seems pretty stable ..i'll head out to Ardmore though ( leaded?)

i used to run the DRT, the CMP and/ or C14+ in the race cars back home but im guessing you'll get raped on price here ..

the DRT is what i'd use on the FJ though if i could get it here

You sound like you probably know more about this stuff than me but an old flatmate of mine could get large quantities of toluene. I think its called that anyway. They use it when they mix paint and stuff and im sure its the stuff they use in those ultra expensive octane boost things. best thing is it ok for O2 sensors in injected vehicles like the turbo car I used to have. With about 20 - 30% of that and 96 RON pumpgas the car went faster but you had to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery and hitting the brake (to use make sure fully drained of power) I understand it sets the computer back to settings to japanese gas setttings (101 Octane,i t was an import)
Dunno if that means much to you but it made my car go harder and got rid of a stutter as it pulled timing as the boost spiked up....And no it never blew up.

tried Tolulene .. wasnt chuffed/... Acetone works WAY better for some reason... seat of the pants better.. thats why im looking for the DTME to spike up the Oxygen in the mix ( might try some Orange Essence from Foodtown just to give it a different scent too...)

Nice! you know that means im going to try that (off road only of course!) in my VW that I pushed a little bit too far with the compression increase...!

I have a photocopy of the page from "tuning for speed" by the legendary Phil Irving on fuels and mixes if that helps ya... wasn't written in a time where it matterd if it was nasty lead stuff and all too. It has different mixes and rough jet changes for each ones and what comp ratios they suit (on old motor, but i guess relitive difference still relevant)

I've recently brought avgas at ardmore. I think it was christianson aviation or something like that that sold me the gas. $2 a litre they charged. I honestly could not feel any improvement in my gsxr from pump gas but I had to try (and it smelled good too!) One of the guys I work with uses it in a very serious V8 of his (that gets 2km per litre).

most leaded fuels are what they call "Slow Burn".. helps to have an oxygenator and/or something to increase the burn rate like Acetone.

Faster flame front= more energy=higher output

would love to get ahold of some fuel grade H202 for a test ( i know some of the speedway guys play with it at western springs)

but like i said in the original post .. i can get my leaded at kumeu.. im lookin for the additives.. any chemical supply houses in the area carry it you know of?

Haha. The greatest wilderness area in the world is the space between a greenie's ears! They reckon they care so much about the planet, and they're hardly ever on it.
Yep, Sarge, avgas is full of TEL ( tetra ethyl lead), which gives it higher knock resistant properties

I run proper avgas in my bike, it's a bit easier to get when your a pilot
during my pilot training I learned what "race" fuel was... avgas unlike normal fuel is gauranteed to the pump that its quality is good, it also has an expiry so if they cant gaurantee the fuel or if it's expired it cant be used in aeroplanes, so the likes of BP and Mobil sell it (ungauranteed) as "race fuel" because otherwise they'd have to throw it out just because they couldnt gaurantee its quality. When my jetting gets "close to the edge" I like the fact that my fuel is in fact the gauranteed octane stuff.
PM me or email me at mail@timmcarthur.co.nz for $45 knee sliders incl GST and shipping
