UK Police want “DNA from speeding motorists”

British Police are asking for powers to take DNA samples from suspects for offences such as speeding.

Support for an extension of police powers was disclosed in responses to a Home Office consultation paper. “A number of respondents welcomed the ability to reduce the threshold, including to the extent of allowing for the taking of fingerprints, DNA and footwear impressions for non-recordable offences for the purpose of offender identification and searching databases.”

A Home Office spokesman said “The DNA database has revolutionised the way the police can protect the public through identifying offenders and securing more convictions. No decisions have yet been made and any detailed proposals will be subject to a further public consultation next year.”

The Association of Chief Police Officers has warned that allowing police to take samples for non-recordable offences — crimes for which offenders cannot be imprisoned — might be perceived as “the increasing criminalisation of the generally law-abiding public”.

Shadow Home Secretary, David Davis, added “It is inconceivable that the powers of the police could be extended without a serious and substantive debate in Parliament. They have already encroached on people’s privacy without proper debate on this matter and this can go no further.”

What struck me, the last time I went to the States, was how pleasant the passport control people are now. They used to be bad-tempered Jobsworth Nazis, man, woman, girl and boy. But now? They are really nice, refer to you by first name constantly and explain what they are doing as they take your fingerprints/retinal scans/DNA sample/blood, urine and hair clipping...

I still shudder when I recall how it used to be - especially when a bunch of us went to visit a friend who had just moved out there and had barely any furniture. So another friend brought a fold-out bed... one made with metal tubes you clip together! As you can imagine, this did not look good on the metal detector. So they asked him what it was and he explained. So he was then asked to build it.

Not thinking, he went striding over to the bag quite quickly. All of the attending officers flipped off the tops of their holsters and the guns started sliding out as a barked command of "S l o w l y" was issued. The rest of us were then ushered out of the area while our friend built a bed in the middle of US Customs!

I'd rather have my prints taken than go through that again!

There is a method used for taking DNA samples from whales of shooting a tethered dart into the whale which takes a small plug of tissue out when it's pulled out.
Maybe they could do the same thing with motorcyclists so that they wouldn't even have to stop you, they could just shoot you as you ride past....brilliant!!!

    That's no good.

If they did that, we wouldn't get to eat either the whales or the motorcyclists.
