Most of us know the sort of stuff portrayed in this magazine isn't necessarily suitable for teenage girls, must less girls younger than that, but "teen girl" magazines like Dolly and Girlfriend are ever popular. That doesn't mean the content published inside is fit for its readers...

Anyway, I was browsing through the news this morning on Stuff.co.nz and came across this article on the sort of content Dolly provides to its young clientelle. If you have a daughter or young family member that reads Dolly, you will want to read this article. It's not short... but you will want to know what this magazine is telling your daughter!

The magazines do contain some reasonable advice. You remember back to your school days -- who wasn't playing around back in high-school? It's useful for girls to at least have some information on contraception and the like. The article is correct, schools often don't cover this stuff.

Girls also develop much earlier than us lads. They're having crushes and thoughts about guys from at least 12 or 13 years old. Information like `don't dress like a slut' but `sometimes wearing a revealing top will do the trick' isn't exactly horrifically immoral. The magazines are also sort of fashion magazines as well, so you will get a bit of that nonsense as well.

I'd argue the gangster `culture' has much more to answer for in its objectification of women and promotion of the slut as queen.

I wasn't allowed to read Dolly or Girlfriend untill I was like 13 or 14. I think cause mum knew the content and I was rather oblivious to the sex stuff that it talked about. I have always been such a innocent young thing

I used to read this mag, stopped after a few months when I realised how much it cost, just to get ads for trashy clothing and sex tips. lol.. it was like 5 to 6 dollars for the mag.... geez...

but yeah, sometimes I reckon these teen mags can go a bit over the top...

I used to read it when I was a teen. My parents never spoke about sex so this was the way to learn....read up about it.

Some things were trashy in the mag, but pick and choose I say.

this is true.. but what I found is that it was just the same thing issue after issue... that and the fact that it was mostly ausssie stuff for everything.. but that nz girls mag (forgot the name) was even worse than dolly, was thinner, and cost pretty much the same... cleo was a tad better, but it was mainly the same thing...

stick to music mags like rolling stone, or other, i'd say.
