P-labs or speeders - Come on Govt!!

This is purely anecdotal second hand information.

Clan Lab seminar - speaker is an ex cop.

He says that funding for Police is partly determined by speed ticket quota's - not enough tickets issued = little funding.

Hence, Northland has 45 cops working traffic and only 4 working drugs (maybe clan labs specifically).

Clan labs cost a lot of money - decontamination, storage of equipment, expert contractors, then prosecution costs of a complicated and drawn out case.

Unlike speeding tickets, which are easy to issue, seldom challenged more than simply a letter written to the bureau, and rake in the dollars.

Apparently there were 18 known clan labs in Northland, but due to the costs of dealing with them, Police only dealt to the 6 worst ones........12 more happily bubbling away as we speak.

Michael Cullen is sitting on a shitload of dosh, yet here we have known clan labs continuing to operate.

Of course, P has nothing to do with child abuse, domestic violence, car crashes, drug violence or gangs does it ?...........bloody oath it has.

WTF is up with this Govt ?

I'll happily put this out there, I WONT be voting this labour govt in for another term. The greddy BOS's are just money grabbing now. The purse is so overflowing & yet were being asked to dig even DEEPER???

National may not be any better under Keys, time will tell but this Labour govt has had a long enough run.

who was the speaker? ex-cib i would guess. would love to see a reference to police funding being related to tickets issued. there is a contractual obligation to deliver hours to the tla/ltsa contracts, but there is no minimum ticket #'s in those contracts.

I missed the seminar unfortunately.

I understand that there is a school in South Island where officers have been told they must issue 80 tickets per year.

That's 80 tickets not 80 hours as far as I am aware.

Yeah, but you can't nab someone for P-related offenses by sticking your hairdryer out the window of the car and flagging them down. And with speeding, the revenue is so EASY to gather. Five minutes work, a couple of hundred dollars, no loose ends, and the paperwork's more or less completed on the spot.

Another example of the country being run according to dodgy economic principles? It's a pity the bureaucrats can't come up with a cost-effective P-lab solution. If only they could seal up the labs with the 'suspects' (I'll say they're suspect - they're downright dodgy!) inside, then blow the fuckers up! Not too much mess, and no loose ends.

Careful guys and girls, they might start making the police clan-lab teams issue traffic tickets on the way to and from the P-Labs. I see they are pushing the youth-aid/education cops to dish school zone tickets out down south now too bless them.

actually, if you went cruising with a reasonably switched on ex-gdb/cib cop that has moved to traffic, you'd be pleasantly surprised how many extraneous offences are picked up by hair dryer pointing.

some of us picked up one or 2 stolen cars and a couple of druggies a week, once even a murderer who was wanted for failing to appear.

somegood finds?

car/trailer with hydroponic set up en-route for fitting to a house. 400 plants in the boot.

international druggie wanted on warrant with 1/2 a kilo of meth under the seat, $600k cash in the boot.

chasing a motorcycle 'club' member on his harley - he fell off the road and died 2 minutes after losing me in traffic - $250k of meth and $100k in his bag.

stopping a semi for speeding at 0300am one morning. 50 4wd motorbikes in the back of it - all stolen from the south island destined for outback aussie.

there's heaps more. i'll leave those for my book.

I have a copy somewhere (will try to find it so I can quote it) of an article that highlighted how the government now includes the revenue gathered with traffic tickets in the BUDGET!!!!

While there may not be a specific number of tickets quoted anywhere there are definite "performance expectations" and the police are expected to make a certain number of 'contacts' with the public during a shift. Naturally that's left to the imagination as to whether it's helping old ladies cross the road or issuing tickets to errant axe murderers who dane to travel at 111kph.

The trouble is; policing (real policing) is not a cheap operation and while this country does ok it isn't the richest around. Too much gets spent on bludgers and the consolidated fund shrinks accordingly, leaving less to spend on the police who have to deal with said bludgers coz those bludgers have money handed to them on a platter and they have all day to piss it up against the wall. They get bored, drunk, drugged up (and fucked up) so it's an ongoing cycle.

Cut the nanny state to a minimum and watch this nation flourish. (Then we'll be able to build great roads and ride at 150kph everywhere....won't we?)

I see what goes on around Rangitoto College, Murrays Bay Intermediate and Murrays Bay Primary schools (on Auckland's North Shore) every day. There are over 5,000 kids getting about there twice a day, every day. I have no problem with the 40kph limit but what really gets my GOAT is how I get a ticket on SH1 for 111kph and there are HEAPS of dickheads taking their kids to school with NO FREAKIN' SEATBELT on and they do it every day without fear of any repercussions.

It's not the money, it's about crime and punishment. At 111kph who am I endangering on a motorcycle? Me, right? Who are these parents endangering? Their own bloody kids, that's who.

Grrr.
