They're not fish.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?
People are only "caring" because they've been declared extinct, which means that we can't (or don't have to) do anything. There's people to blame here!
In a week or so it'll slip back out of our memories and we'll look for something else to criticize.
I find it a bit pretentious for those claiming it to be a tragic loss to the planet and ecosystem. If it hadn't made the news, nobody would have cared.
Puppets.
WTF???!!! How can you possibly care about something if you don't know it's happened or happening? Are you saying once we do hear of an offensive occurrence we should just ignore it? Should we all just sit back and let bad shit happen without comment?
So people who react to voice their concern over or act against crap happenings in the world are just "puppets" are we? I reckon another "p" word is more appropriate: participants. We choose to participate in life and have some miniscule effect on the direction it takes. On the other hand we have the "spectators" who just laugh and throw rocks at the participants....how noble of them.......
That's partially my point. People who really do care about these dolphins would be doing what they could to prevent the extinction up until now. They wouldn't suddenly care all of a sudden on notice of their death.

Well see, my stance was throwing rocks at the spectators in showing a pretentious sense of caring about this sort of thing and doing nothing.Originally Posted by slowpoke
As an aside, if I told you of my pet higue (the last of its kind) that had recently died, you could not possibly care about the animal itself. I'm saying this because a higue is something I just made up, something you can't picture or experience in any form. You may care in the sense that you understand it's a loss of mine, but that's a form of caring towards a similar feeling of loss you yourself have experienced, a selfish form of caring that only becomes relevant if able to be related to something you know. You care about the effect of the higue dying on me, not of it and not of preserving other species.
Therefore, how can observers in New Zealand care about a species of animal they have never encountered, only heard of? Are you caring for the loss of China? If so, why all the comments of the Chinese not caring about these animals? If they don't care, isn't that sense or caring on our behalf rendered selfish and pointless? Don't get me wrong, there are genuine people out there trying to do what they can to preserve other animals, and a lot in NZ too. I could take this off on a tangent on the morals of preserving a species as well but I won't.
My point is that this pretentious "caring" put forward by spectators is a selfish reflection of themselves and unless is actually acted upon in preventing further things from happening...is pretentious.
It is frustrating to see a species wiped out when it could have been prevented, especially when it is so far from your own control. There isn't much we can do from here, but voicing our opinions about it may make others sit up and do something about the next species that may go.
Do you care when you hear of someone you don't know getting murdered? Same sorta thing really..... just because you don't know of them/it doesn't make it any less of a trajedy...

It's a shame you couldn't have come up with a point with a bit more depth.
You've completely missed the point. If people don't give a hoot about things they've never seen, or are never likely to, we may as well go back to living in caves.
MD - don't worry mate, some of us get it.

Thanks Death Inc and Jim2 for seeing my point in starting this thread.
Mekk, firstly I'm sorry about your higue, I didn't mean to run it over. It should have been fenced in better anyway.
I for one am not pretending to be caring now I learn that a species is extinct. I am saddened to learn that something I never saw but may have enjoyed seeing, given a chance, is gone forever. Now I and all others have no chance.
Your comment is silly that I am claiming it to be a tragic loss, now that I know about it. So a tragic event is not tragic unless it gets media coverage? I don't think so. Since when did we meassure tragedies based on the number of viewers? I didn't witness the holocaust but I can still understand that it was wrong. I never saw a Moa but wish I could.
As individuals we can't do much. You are quite right though. It is all my fault for not knowing of this pending loss and now playing a spectator after the event. I should have robbed Fort Knox and used all the money to fly to China and do something positive. Silly lazy me. You of course never sit on a couch criticising others. It is great that you took time out from saving the world to criticise a few of us for expressing our dissapointment over a loss we could not prevent.
I for one give regularly to WWF and that other mob. But that's my personal business and I don't care what you think of it. If you want to save the higue go for it.
I can't single handedly save the Tuatara or the Kiwi.. or the higue for that matter. But as a taxpayer I expect our collective Govt to act on our behalf and our Conservation dept seem to work hard. I expect our Conservation dept to find out what animals are at risk, bring it to our attention and try and save it. I have no doubt that many Chinese tree huggers did their best - unfortunately it wasn't enough. My point was that their Govt had massive power and money at it's disposal and probably could have saved a few; Relocate, ship to aquariums for breeding programs, whatever. But leaving it for a foreign British team to come to China to see if they can find any left!
Time for this argument to go the way of the doddo and Baiiji doplhin.
Happiness is a means of travel, not a destination
All jokes aside (i assure you - I was joking!), this is a dreadful event that has occurred. Here's a link to an interesting website that explores the possibility of the current era being one of mass extinction.
Scroll down and you'll see a news article on NZ's Maui dolphin.

Ok, I need to apologise here.
My last post was due to an ill-thought out, snap reaction to the blatant racism that was expressed by some as an excuse or reason for us losing this creature.
I understand there are people that genuinely care and are (rightly) upset about this.
I had intended to address the racism of what they were saying and comparing the ignorance of that to the fact that they would not have cared until it was too late and there was someone to blame. I was trying to bring light also to the point that they care more about blaming someone or something else than the actual loss of the dolphin.
Obviously I put it across poorly and for that I'm sorry.
We seem to just talk and complain more than anything, maybe people feel they doing something complaining. Who care what happens in China ? It seems we have a bigger problem here beating our kids to death, Bet the chinese are upset that we are doing that.
In a weeks time everyone will have moved on and the next topic probably going to be economics (the dollar and house prices) until we get sick of it. But the problem with the kids and the dolphins will still be there and only the genuine will we concerned. Can imagine if you went to China and tried to raise the profile about the dolphins with the Chinese government you would be warmly received.
Actually they are and comments are being made by the Chinese Govt to the NZ Govt about the Violence and Racism inherent in NZ society. You can thank the abuse Asian language students cop for doing nothing more than attempting to provide themselves with more opportunities in life, which will probably have a positive flow on effect in 20 years for us - if we give them pleasant memories and functional language capabilities.
I know you don't think it is important but damaging or destroying niche ecologies always turn out to have a much bigger impact than expected.

Well, you will find a few hundred thousand of them on Queen Street in Auckland for starters.
....with what armed forces shall we do that!! Uncle Helen and the social engineering department wiped out our tiny armed forces and turned them into tree hugging peacekeepers and VIP transport services - since she can't use the police motorcade any more without getting a speeding ticket.
