New member about to do more mods

Hi all, I have fitted an after market can to my exhaust (2 brothers can to suzuki GS 1200 SS ), less back pressure but running ok, had to block PAR system. slight backfire from 6k to 4k engine braking.
about to fit standard bandit carbs and GSX 1400 air filter.was told this is the best next step by one who knows.
tried air filter already and runs crap above 4k.
dont really know what I'm doing....??? any advice would be great.

Erm, sounds like you need a dyno & a knowledgeable tuner to redo the jetting.

you could arbitrarily go up one size on the mains & up a clip on the needle but that may be a step too far in one area or not far enough in another.

May as well try the other carbs if you have them but be prepared to screw around with jetting. Look on the Factorypro site there is some good articles on jetting CV carbs (have to dig around). Obviously his jet kits won't be made for GS12

I have it from a good source that the first thing to do, (you may have already done this) is to remove the igniter speed limiter.
Other wise no matter what gets done to the engine 180km's will not be exceeded.
The speed limiter does not just affect top gear.
I think it is an easy job, perhaps just a wire cut at the igniter.
The speedo will never read past 180km though.

I know a guy who tried to put pods on his after ripping out the air filter.
He never got it to run properly - DON'T do that.

Since they are based on the last of the oil's the 1991/2 GSXR100M/N engine I would suggest changing the cams and carbs and probably the ignition igniter.
The unrestricted GSXR 1127cc with 40mm carbs put out approx 145hp stock and went over 150 with a good exhaust and jetting.
Since yours is the 1mm overbore 1216cc (my guess) performance would be
even better - think reliable wheelie machine.
The 40mm carbs were considered too large for the stock GSXR so maybe
you don't need to go all the way.

Hey Adam, I have a 1200 bandit that i put a scorpion exhaust on and a K&N air filter in, It was hesitating mid range on acceleration, I knew the can and filter would lean the mixture so i took it to a guy to set the carbs up for me. After putting it on the dyno he said he'd never seen a bandit run so lean and said if i had spanked it round i could have holed a piston, he promptly re-jetted carbs and balanced them. Let me tell you it made a hell of a difference, changed the bike, Hope you get it sorted dude,

hi all,thanks for the help.

the situation now ( after weekend working on it ) is the limiter is gone, 2 brothers can on original headers,richer idle mix ( 4 turns out ).
If anybody wants to know how to remove limiter properly ask me.

Totally blocked PAR system ( funny air injection to front of block under exhaust ) , blocked it at front of block by making alloy plates to fit. removed all the parts,also blocked its air supply on airbox. This is a lot better than blocking rubber pipes in the system at top of engine ( what I had done before) , has improved performance heaps.

the bandit carbs fit the block rubbers but not the airbox rubbers, will find out tomorrow if the bandit airbox rubbers are interchangable. also need bandit throttle cables. think I can get all the parts second hand tomorrow.

the GSX 1400 air filter fits my bike perfectly, Im hoping that with the bandit carbs the filter will work, at present it will not ( same effect as pod filters ), not enough air velocity or direction or something. If the carbs work but the air filter is to much I will try to restrict it temporarly untill I can get it dyno tuned.

I want to dyno it as soon as I get the bandit carbs and moded air filter in, I don't know who to go to in Auckland???

The work I did this weekend has helped, rain stopped long enough for me to take it out this arvo and it was sweet and gutsy.
Slight flutter under power around 4 to 6 K then smooth and strong, still fat down low. Think the flutter has to do with lack of back pressure / vacuum issue ???????? not really sure. slight backfire engine braking from about 6 to 4 K, once again back pressure.
This may be solved with bigger carbs? That is what I hope, the bigger in will balance the bigger out ( aftermarket can ).

futher to that, bandit carbs are 36 mm, original are 32. thought about the 40mm off a GSXR but realised that I would need new exhaust header pipes and cams and ignition etc, and I would lose some of the bottom end.
I like the torque so decided to go Bandit carbs because it would be heaps easier. should still crack 120 hp I think with pipe,carbs,filter and dyno. thats up from 100 hp factory. I don't think I will lose much torque ???
when I started with the pipe I had no idea what I was getting into, and in hindsight perhaps I should have left well alone, but it has been lots of fun and educational.
Thanks again for the replys, hope somebody else with a GS 1200 SS will benifit from my experience ( or lack of ).

My mates GSSX100N lifts the front all the time easily from low RPM and his bike is probably heavier, so I don't see how you lose any torque raising the HP as I suggested - but your fuel consumption will suffer.
Sounds like what you have done will keep you happy anyway though and
didn't cost you much.

thanks bimotabob, I did go the cheap option. not ready to swap cams yet myself. It will powerstand in first no probs but its at the top end, would love to be able to powerstand past cars on the motorway but think i need a new bike to do that ??? or serious work to mine, and probably better riding skills and bigger nuts.

I had one of the first of these old girls in the country back in 04 - great bike for the money...

I ended up doing the following mods:

Fitted modified Bandit Yoshi RS-3 pipe (9 hp @ rear alone !!!)
Dumped the P.A.I.R valve completely
Removed the Air Box (Requires engine removal to do so...)
Fitted 36 mm Flat Slide C.V carbs & inlet manifolds (GSX 750 FJ)
Fitted K & N Filter (Large surface area type - oval shaped 1 per 2 carbs)
Fitted GSX-R 1100 L Camshafts
Fitted GSX 1100 FJ Igniter (Raises the rev limiter to 10.8 k rpm - requires a bit of modding to the wiring & once done theres no going back to the stock igniter...)

There were various other mods done along the way to the suspension & general looks of the bike...

All up & after a couple of hours on the Dyno she was making 128 hp @ the rear wheel (Up from 94 stock on #1 Cycles old dyno...)

It was simply BIG, LOUD & OBNOXIOUS & a shit load of fun to ride...

Had it out at Puke a couple of times for Club Days & she would happily circulate at around the 65 ~ 66 second mark, although the stock suspension got fairly easily overwhelmed at those sort of speeds...

I'll let you in on a bit of a secret - these bikes DO NOT have some magical limiter on them, the speedo simply stops reading increasing road speed at 180 kph as do many domestic market bikes, theres a very simple "resistor" mod you can do to the P.C.B in the dash to cure the problem (involves using a few bits & pieces out of a K-1 GSX-R 1000 dash)

Feel free to P.M me & bounce any ideas you have, around - I may be able to save you a bit of time &/or anguish

cheers wheelie. now has resistor mod done. two brothers can on original headers. GSX 1400 DNA air filter on original air box ( fits straight in ). 36mm bandit carbs with standard needles, 125 main jet and 45 pilot. jets done when being dynoed at Henderson motorcycles.
106 bhp at rear. good mix.
surprised you got 94 bhp stock off yours, stock standard they are 100 and that must be at crank, was told you lose about 15% at wheel.???

oh year, P.A.I.R. totally gone to. resistor mod I did was to make it think it was in 3rd so you lose rev limiter. all good. interested in speedo mod.

Have a talk to Allan Franklin up at Colemans, he did mine for me one Saturday morning - I was looking over his shoulder at the time but don't recall exactly which resistors he changed... (It's a few years back now !!!)

Took him around an hour & a half once the P.C.B was out, $150.00 for the pleasure !!!

I'll post the dyno charts & some photo's of the old girl as soon as I locate the disc there on !!!
