eek Thorensen down & out of Bonneville

Well our Kiwi at Bonneville has crashed out during runs at the Bonneville speed week

The ZX14 stepped out sideways at 280kmh at the 5mile marker and continued to slide for another 800m taking out the 5.5mile marker tower and apparently damaging the bike beyond a repairable state due to lack of replacement parts availability (seems a bit odd though for the states).

Allen walked away from the crash with only a minor cut on one hand/arm and a few scuffs on the leathers.
He reckoned it was a bit of an odd feeling actually being on the bike as it slid sideways along the track at 280kmh perfectly upright before dispatching from it

(took bits of this from the ChCh press, couldn't find a link to any more info though)

The bike then turned side on to the course, but he kept travelling in the same direction as if he was skidding on ice.

Had he not sanded down his tread properly or put enough nugget on the tyres like Burt did.

I had to read the article twice. He was trying to break the 300kmh barrier. I'm sure a friend of mine hit 320kmh on a Hayabusa along the back straight at Pukekohe.

This guy could have saved himself a bit of grief and money - Pukekohe's not too far from Hamilton.

    Surely they meant 400kmh barrier?

I thought the whole point of Bonneville salt flats was that you could go faster there than anywhere else on the suface of the planet since you don't need to worry about bumping into stuff. Seems pointless if the surface is so bad that 280kmh after 8km of acceleration is deemed pretty good.

I'm a novice and managed 240kmh on a 636 on the Pukekohe back straight.
In space, no one can smell your fart.

There can be a big difference between indicated speed and actual speed
"If you can make black marks on a straight from the time you turn out of a corner until the braking point of the next turn, then you have enough power."

He wanted to do 340kmph, he has done it before in NZ, on the salts its different as the surface is very slippery and hard to get the power down, he told me he got heaps of wheelspin at 175 mph and had trouble controlling the bike, he attempted to solve this by adding more weight to the bike but this obviously didnt work.
Oh well better luck next time, Im just happy he is okay and the leathers we made for him handled a 20 second 275 kmph slide (thats a BIG call)

I hope he has a crack next year !

For Burt to have got the Indian over 200mph was quite a feat then given the conditions on the salt. I remember in the film of Burt seeing how bad it looked when it got wet there.

As for Big Dan if that is your beef with this guy like Quasi said it really doesn't belong on this forum about bikes. I'd initially assumed you meant he was some sort of bike cheat - as in not following rules for class etc.
    Cheers
