Weird indicator bulbs -- BAY9

My new headlight and indicators are working very nicely, apart from one thing; one of the indicator bulbs was blown when I got it. I'm having a bit of trouble tracking down a replacement; Repco can get one for me, but they cost $19 plus $4 freight. I only paid $20 for the indicators FFS!

I rang Cyclespot as they were closing, and he reckoned he just got a box in of them (he said `for after market flashers, right?'), but he isn't quite sure and he couldn't give me a price.

They seem to be used for aftermarket lights a lot. I'm sure somebody else has had to go through the trouble of trying to replace one of these; where did you get it? How much?

It's a Philips BAY-9 fitting. The base is 9mm diameter, total length of bulb ~3cm and a bit I think. The pins are not 180degrees opposed, but 60degrees.

Alternatively, has anybody `cut down' a normal $3 type bulb to suit? I'm wondering if you shaved off one of the pins so it fit in, would it work?

Yep, they're a shit of a thing, and provide inadequate illumination in any case. Rewire with high intensity LEDs, might save your life.

They seem to do a reasonable job of lighting up -- better than the old non-reflector original indicators. Do you reckon it's possible to re-wire the indicators with LEDs? I suppose you could just solder to the existing fitting. Stuffed if I know how to get a soldering iron in there, lol...

I'll get the normal bulb first and then I'll do a bit of research into this LED idea. Cheers.

Hi

Your bulb looks like the halogen used on the emgo aftermarket indicators.
I think but not 100% sure that the emgo ones have opposed pins but were the small base like yours and around the 18 -21w power range.
They are not that dear so check them out and see - they are way brighter than incandescent original bulbs being halogen in all and have more viewing angle than a lot of the chinese LED junk that's out there.

The reason I went for these instead of the EMGO cheapies was because these have DOT approved lenses, to minimise WOF hassle.
