great place to ride, i can't tell you much about southland but i've been most other places (i'm a dirty ol' cantab)

a lot less traffic, a lot less cops, a lot less roads too, partly because of the smaller population and partly due to the geography; i.e. real mountains and lots of 'em

    do the west coast
cross the main divide everywhere you can
    do all of otago
    do banks peninsula
do picton to nelson via queen charlotte drive
    do the takaka hill
and im sure southland has some fine roads too

    Another convert?

Nope he's originally from canterbury so still has the patch to remove.

Enjoy the south island mr and mrs yod, giving serious consideration to going there in March with the tickford club(fabulous ford club exclusive almost),bit of a top of the south tiki tour, but might add a few days to it,even arranged discount ferry crossing per car, sacrilidge not to use the bike but will do so sometime.

Don't forget the Catlins (scenic, no traffic), The Milford road (the most scenic ride you'll ever have and a good ride ta boot), Crown Range road (just cause), etc etc. It is all good!

Nice photos there. I'm still at the "want to do it" stage so no proper planning yet, just getting info from people who have done it so I know the does and don'ts. At ths stage it may be a solo tour for me so I may have to stick to the beaten track in case I get into trouble.

I've done several SI tours on my lonesome. Don't worry to much about being off the beaten track - plenty of tourist traffic around and the locals don't bite. Stuff the "want to do it", every biker "must do it". Great country man, get out there and enjoy!

was really good to meet you all, if you ever in christchurchlet me know and i hope to return the favour, just got back to hamilton, where had to get a new front tyre abd the discs sanded cause they glazed over and were squealing.
found out the dessert road is not that fun to try and ride in the rain with a brand new tyre lol
Pleased you had a good time up here Jeff. Nice to catch up with you. Pity you have to leave the good roads behind.

Good to meet you Jeff, that was an excellent ride wasn't it! Drive safe on the way back, hopefully I'll get down to the SI sooner rather than later and have a catch up
