I laughed when I first read Hitchers post... but then remember this, KB was mentioned in parliament in March, so what is said here obviously does get noticed by the Big Wide World...

It may be worth reading the link and ensuring compliance, we all know how petty politics (and politicians!) can be...

Worst case scenario is that a successful candidate could have their win challenged, with all of the angst that goes around this.

Any candidate endorsements need to be authorised by the person being endorsed.

To be all legal you gotta add the vital caveat; "If this breaks any election laws you can suck on my salty ham-flavoured balls, muthaf&%ka."
But seriously, you gotta get permission and quote it.
EDIT: Oh, Nah, I'm wrong, the candidate for Central Otago has explained it just below.

The Local Electoral Act 2001 does allow for public comments without the candidate'a approval.

    Section 113 (5)
This section does not restrict the publication of any news or comments relating to an election in a newspaper or other periodical, or on the internet, or in any other medium of electronic communication accessible by the public, ........
Basically if anyone wishes to comment, or say vote for XXXX, or don't vote for YYYY, then that is OK. However if it is a paid advertisement or a poster, then it must be authorised.
