Hi Guys, been reading through this thread a bit. Not sure if I'll make the ride but I see ya mutterings about organising the ride/stops/speed etc. After doing a few GC's and Southern X's I've thought a bit about what I reckon you need to do if going on a decent sized ride.
I'm working on something about it for my website but take a look at this doc http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dfrbcnqz_15gjbrg3 if interested (work in progress). Of course a lot of this isn't rocket science and some of you've mentioned bits and pieces of it.
I don't pretend to know everything or want to tell you what to do but anyway...
One thing I thought is that maybe you need to split the group up a bit - the more people the more riding styles etc. Maybe the slower guys go together and start earlier? Maybe people with smaller tanks/poor economy go together - whatever. And yep it'll help if everyone knows the route.
So who's signing up for the 2008 GC?
I'm sure it'll be a great ride - some great roads you'll be seeing.
thanks for your input Bandit depending on the size of the final group will depend on splits happening but at this stage we will be staying together until we hit Opotiki where it looks like we will be joined by another 10 or 12 riders (non KBers)from Gisborne
otherwise it may get a little tight in the gorge and less experience riders dont need too see faster riders tailgating them and regrouping At Matiwai
It is excellent to have input from an experienced long distance rider. Plan as we may it will still be a huge learning curve on the day as I would class most of the riders on the day to be "cafe riders"
These are some of the points I was trying to address before we get out there and do it. Will be interesting to see how it pans out.
I am keen as to get into a GC. 2008 could be a go. Have to get myself organised properly and a little fitter for that kind of ride though.
PS. what happened to the mirror?
Best place to stay in Hawkes Bay here
