    The verb 'plait' is from the Latin plicare, 'to fold', via the Old French pleir and the latter adjective form pleit from the past participle plicatus.

    'Plat', on the other hand, ultimately derives from the Greek platys, 'flat'.

    Therefore I contend that usage of the form 'plat' in relation to a braid or fold is degenerate and etymologically unjustified.

    Common usage be damned.
