    Pink Batts flammable/baffling pipes

It has become WOF time, and I've discovered I absolutely positively cannot get my custom pipes off to put the stock ones on! The dudes simply did not put any anti-sieze or similar on the join where they hook onto the header pipe. (mine are custom end pipes).

So to get my WOF I'm going to have to make some baffles. I've tried rolling up some galvanized wire mesh.. didn't make much difference. Perhaps not densely rolled up enough? I can't get it rolled any tighter.. and "chicken" wire I know is easy but I'm not to keen on it rusting in my pipes.

A guy at my work said with a bike he had he got a small piece of pink batts (very small he says..) and put it down the pipe and then shoved in wound up chicken wire to hold it in.

So.. any thoughts on that? Is Pink Batts flammable?

if you are going to go that way for cheap baffles use goldielocks pot scrubbing pads, they should do the job to get a warrent, but i dont know what the WOF dude is going to say if he looks up ya exhaust and sees all the mess.

Would be pretty easy to look down them.. they are two inch wide (on the inside) short length drag pipes and are on a slant upwards.

I'd have to hope he'd be more concerned that complied with the noise laws then with how I've stuffed the pipe to make it comply.

Goldielocks scrub pads.. you just shove down or you mean use that instead of the batts and then put wire to hold it?

does the same thing as pink batts.

any exhaust shop should be able to make you up some removable baffles that are held in by a bolt, they arent that expensive, probably the same cost as all the chicken wire and pinkbatts you will need, and you will have them forever.

Take your bike to a bike shop rather than to a testing station for your WOF.

I found some fluffy insulation in the rear of my old oven - it's heat proof and makes good baffling material. You might be able to procure some from an oven at the tip ? In the whiteware section rofl

You would THINK any exhaust shop could, but my pipes were made by an exhaust shop and they didn't have a clue how to make baffles.

Unless you mean a bike exhaust shop.

Only about $10 to have the chicken wire and batts :P

Might just take the bike to Trevor Pierce and see what I can get.

Oh and I would like the bike quieter in general, not just for WOF. I get pulled over at night if I ride it. TOO loud. I want it loud but not "No fucking way mate... pull over now" loud.

    Pink batts all the way.

I use them to pack all my mufflers. Cheap (outta the roof!) and work well.

I had the same problem with you on my old GPX250.. had a noisy ass Yoshi pipe on it.. But yeah bit of batts and chicken wire did the job well.. untill on the way home when i opened her up and it spat it all out.. but meh.. who needs baffles!

    Hey there Llama Sola,

I am no expert in bike exhausts but I suspect that pink batts would not last long inside exhaust pipes like real exhaust wrap which is similar looking to batts. Pink Batts will burn & blast out eventually. They do have a fire rating but that is more related to how long before they burn in a house fire for safety purposes. Ya gotta remember that they are a building product made for house insulation after all.

Someone already said in another reply that going to a place that specialises in exhaust jobs and getting a baffle made to do what u want is the best option. U can then use it/ remove it as u need and u will always have it.

Another suggestion is go to a place that I have heard of called Custom Engineering at Levels Timaru. They are at RD 4 and the ph is 03-688-7144. They are on the Pleasant Point Highway from the Washdyke end. The site is about 3 - 4 km along on the right with a sign on the farm drive way. I have heard that this guy does truck, marine and bike mufflers & mods at reasonable rates. He is recommended by many riders in Timaru area. Just another option to think about.

Are you taking any prescription medication? [Rain Man]

Thanks, I will look at going to dealer at a later stage as I can't think of any exhausts place in CHCH that does baffles for bikes. I found it hard enough finding an exhaust place that would even do the pipes for my bike

Im going to try the goldilocks and wire mesh rolls and see how long it lasts. The wire mesh rolls I've had in on their own for several weeks now and it's been holding fine but made almost no difference on its own.

Well I tried the goldilocks + wire. Worked really well.. except the ones in the bottom of the two pipes kept flying out after awhile.

Bike shop it is! Hope they can work something out.. would be hard to work on the damn thing since you can't get the end pipes off easily anymore.

Dude if you're going to go with goldilocks and wire, then why are you worried about the chicken wire rusting? Just wind some chicken wire mesh really tightly -- somebody here suggested winding it really tightly around a dowl -- it's actually quite effective once you get it dense enough.

In the longer term, you can buy baffle inserts off eBay and the like. Basically just perforated pipe. If your custom pipes are uniform diameter it should be straightforward.
